AFI DOCS — Environmental Films

Environmental Films at AFI DOCS
The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring will host AFI DOCS June 14-18 — the nation’s documentary film festival known for showcasing the best in documentary filmmaking from the US and around the world. AFI DOCS is also the only film festival in the United States that offers the unique opportunity to connect film audiences with national opinion leaders, filmmakers and intriguing film subjects. With conversations and experiences you won’t experience at any other film festival, AFI DOCS harnesses the power of this important art form and its potential to inspire change. Following is a list of the films with an environmental-theme:
 
NO MAN’S LAND, Thurs. 6/15, 5:45pm, LANDMARK 6, and Fri. 6/16, 1:30pm, SILVER 2: An account of the siege that followed a militant group’s seizure of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon in 2016.
 
MOSQUITO, Thurs. 6/15, 6:30pm, NEWSEUM: An expose on humankind’s war against this threat to our survival and scientists’ efforts to keep this menace at bay.
 

WHAT LIES UPSTREAM, Thurs. 6/15, 8:45pm, LANDMARK 7: An eye-opening investigation into the state of America’s water supply focuses on Charleston, West Virginia.

 
TROPHY, Fri. 6/16, 1pm, LANDMARK 7: A dark journey into the global commodification of big game animals and the consequences that result.
 

AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER, Fri. 6/16, 8:30pm, NEWSEUM: Al Gore returns in the sequel to the original landmark documentary on the challenges of educating the public–and the powerful–about climate change.

 

ATOMIC HOMEFRONT, Sat. 6/17, 7pm, LANDMARK 1, and Sun. 6/18, 9:15pm, SILVER 3: Citizens try to deal with a large landfill contaminated with radioactive waste and an underground fire that is threatening a neighborhood in major metropolitan area.
BILL NYE: SCIENCE GUY, Sun. 6/18, 5:45pm, LANDMARK 1: The beloved TV personality finds himself in the fight of his life as he faces those who want to debunk and diminish scientific principles.
