SUMMARY:Plastics\, Water and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Plastics\, Water and Climate Change \nThursday\, February 28  •  7 – 8:30 pm \nCafe of India\, 4909 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest \, Washington\, DC 20016 \nDr. Sarah-Jeanne Royer\,  will present her latest research on plastic degradation\, green house gases\, and plastic pollution in general.  \nSafe Healthy Playing Fields program meeting \nAll welcome but please RSVP if possible to ensure space availability: \n<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dr-sarah-jeanne-royer-on-plastic-pollution-tickets-57148850751?utm-medium=discovery&utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-source=strongmail&utm-term=listing> \nHors d’oeuvres will be served\, and there will also be a cash bar. She investigated the emissions of greenhouse gases from plastics in the environment at the Center for Microbial Oceanography\, Research and Education.  She has been  science advisor for Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii\, and started using data collection from volunteers for citizen science projects. Her goal is to understand better the degradation and fragmentation processes of plastic and fate in the ocean in addition to the plastic accumulation on the different islands of Hawai’i. Her long-last objective is for policymakers to use data from scientists and volunteers to design better laws and policies to reduce plastic production & consumption.  \nIn addition to her background in environment and marine biology she was the first female sergeant leading a group of 40 people in the first French Canadian regiment of the Canadian Army. She served for the Voltigeurs de Quebec for 13 years and participated in two missions in Kabul and Kandahar (Afghanistan) on international development and lead a project on Afghan women. \nSome links to her research and an interview: \nhttps://www.surfrider.org/coastal-blog/entry/new-study-shows-plastic-as-source-of-greenhouse-gases-potentially-contribut \n https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0200574
