DESCRIPTION:350MoCo April Monthly Meeting \nTuesday\, April 28  •  7:00 – 9:00 pm \n \n  \n350MoCo successfully completed our first Steering Committee election. We conducted a membership drive\, and then\, over five days\, members elected the new Steering Committee. Given the challenging times and major distractions we all face\, it’s perhaps not surprising that our election did not bring out new candidates. In any case\, the current Steering Committee continues to stand up for the work — and it now has been elected by members\, rather than chosen by networking.   \n\nPlease meet the newly elected Steering Committee\, with their respective areas of focus:\n\nJeff Weisner — President and New Member Development Lead\nKristin Cook — Communications Lead\nDave Goodrich — Treasurer and Secretary\nLisa Jo Finstrom — Meeting Management Lead\nChristine Pendzich — Coalition Building Lead\n\nRick Sullivan will continue to work closely with the Steering Committee as lead on labor union relations\, divestment campaign lead and music guru. Rick serves as a model of how any member can offer to set up a campaign on any issue related to our Mission. Please feel free to suggest campaign ideas to any one of the SC members.\n\nAs we undertake this transition we want to take a moment to thank Ellen Post and Geoff Kidd\, two longtime Steering Committee members who each chose not to run for this cycle. They have both been involved with 350MoCo from its earliest days and have contributed immensely to our work. DESCRIPTION:350 MoCo Monthly Meeting \nTuesday\, January 15  •  7:00 – 9:00 pm\nLittle Falls Library\, 5501 Massachusetts Ave.\, Bethesda\, MD \nOur next meeting on Tuesday\, Jan. 15th will include a presentation from Elizabeth Bunn of the Labor Network for Sustainability about the upcoming Transit Equity Day event\, of which we are a cosponsor. We are excited to be building connections through this event with labor and social justice movements around the County and emphasizing the links between climate justice and transit equity. Here’s where you come in:  We need several volunteers to make this event effective and powerful so please join us to learn more! \nAlso speaking at the meeting will be Emily Frias of CCAN on their two campaigns for this year’s MD legislative session – the No New Fossil Fuels campaign and the Clean Energy Jobs Act. The NNFF campaign seeks to establish legislation requiring public input on any new fossil fuel infrastructure plans in MD. SUMMARY:Montgomery County Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Montgomery County Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (MC-FACS) monthly meeting is Sept 17 from 730 to 9pm at River Road UUC\, 6301 River Road Bethesda 20817.  We are going to be discussing getting out the vote for climate friendly candidates for the Nov 6 election\, and having our congregations pledge to reduce green house gases 80% in line with the MC resolution. \n  \nPLEASE JOIN US TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY \nWe started MC-FACS in Sept 2017 to bring together congregations in Montgomery County that are interested in fighting global warming at a local level.  Our aim is to be a moral voice urging the Montgomery County Council and Executive to pass laws limiting carbon emissions from Montgomery County. We are working with Interfaith Power and Light\, Sierra Club\, and 350.org. \nHistory.  In 2017\, Sierra Club MC\, and 350moco.org lobbied the MC Council to pass the International Green Construction Code\, to reduce carbon emissions from commercial buildings by 10%.  River Road UUC\, Cedar Lane UUC\, and Beth Chai all helped in this effort\, but we were not able to make contact with other green churches in MC.  IPL does not work on County legislation\, and other MC faith organizations do not address climate issues.  The construction industry was well organized\, with 10-20 developers working together against the legislation\, and it finally passed in sept 2017 in a weakened version. \nFairfax County VA has the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) which is a coalition of over 50 faith groups lobbying county government on climate issues.  We will use them as a model\, and try to bring churches to support climate legislation in MC.  Since Maryland gives counties control over building codes and much transportation\, we don’t have to wait for state or national changes before we move against carbon pollution here. \nAs of Sept 2018 members from over 30 congregations have attended our monthly meetings \nCurrent issues with which we are involved include \n\nClosing the Dickerson Incinerator\nDivesting fossil fuel stocks from the County pension funds\nAsking for a County Climate Office to oversee carbon emissions\nLobbying for the Maryland Forest Conservation Act\nResearching clean electricity options\nGetting out the vote for environmental candidates\n\nFor more info email me: walter.weiss@verizon.net \nWalter Weiss \nCo-Chair Environmental Task Force \nRiver Road UUC \nwalter.weiss@verizon.net
