SUMMARY:Muddy Branch Alliance Weed Warriors and Litter Pickup
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday 5/10 for Weed Warriors and Litter Pickup!\nMinor location change for our litter pickup this weekend: We’ll meet at the School Drive entrance of Malcolm King Park to remove invasive plants and learn about the native plants that are found there. Wander and enjoy the beauty of this gorgeous park after the event and have fun with other volunteers. \nWhen? Saturday 5/10 from 10am-12pm \nWhere? Malcolm King Park at the School Drive Entrance. (Find the exact location in Google Maps here.) \nImportant Info: Wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Be aware that the plants can be thorny. All equipment will be provided. \nWant SSL Hours? No Problem! Teenagers must wear the appropriate clothing\, bring water and a snack\, and be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease RSVP to Mary Hlavinka\, mjhlavinka@gmail.com\, so we will be sure to have enough equipment for everyone (and so we can contact you in case of cancellations for weather). Also contact Mary with questions about work days. \nThank you for helping to protect the intrinsic beauty of our watershed! \nWant to host events like this for another area of our trail?  Become a Section Steward\, a lead volunteer for your favorite part of the Muddy Branch. SUMMARY:Conservation Montgomery Big Tree Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Spring 2025 Big Tree Tour \nPlease plan to join Conservation Montgomery for our first Big Tree Tour since 2023. The now famous ‘Big Tree Man’ Joe Howard will be joined by favorite sidekick and botanical expert Carole Bergmann. We will see several champion trees including sweet bay magnolia\, bald cypress\, and paperbark maple. Witch hazel may still be blooming. Two giant specimen trees over 15 feet in circumference are located at Brookside Gardens where we’ll meet. One is a dawn redwood and the other a Norway spruce. Plus\, lots of spring wildflowers will brighten the paths. \nAlways popular\, our tours fill quickly. Locating a reasonably priced bus to transport a large group has become problematic so this tour is designed to take place at just one site. Brookside Gardens has been open since 1969 – long enough for trees first planted to become champions. In Spring\, the gardens are in glorious bloom. \nMeet on Sunday\, May 4\, 10 AM – Brookside Gardens  – In front of the visitor center. Visitors may park for free at the 1800 Glenallan Ave or 1500 Glenallan Ave entrances. Electric vehicle charging stations are available near the Visitor Center. \nCost : $25 per person – limit 25 attendees. register in advance \nRegister here for the Big Tree Tour

SUMMARY:Montgomery County Energy Summit 2025
DESCRIPTION:Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza\, Silver Spring\, MD 20910\n\n\n\n\nThe annual Montgomery County Energy Summit offers cutting-edge education focused on the latest trends in green building\, energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, and related commercial\, multifamily\, and residential topics in Montgomery County. \n \nThe target audience includes building owners\, property managers\, developers\, energy contractors\, and other sustainability professionals working in Montgomery County and the larger DMV area. This event typically attracts 300+ attendees\, speakers\, and exhibitors. \nMontgomery County DEP would like to thank the US Green Building Council National Capital Region for their years of partnership in making this event a success. \nThe 2025 Energy Summit will take place at the metro-accessible Silver Spring Civic Building in downtown Silver Spring\, MD. \nMontgomery County continues to adopt policies and programs that move the building sector to an energy efficient\, low-carbon future in line with the County’s climate action goals. Such policies require additional buildings and types to benchmark and report energy use data each year\, set a framework for building energy performance standards that require most existing buildings to become more energy efficient over time\, require all-electric new construction\, and continue to adopt progressive building codes. \nThe Summit focuses on preparing the commercial building community for compliance with energy benchmarking\, building energy performance standards\, and emerging building codes. We will explore requirements and opportunities in these areas and provide hands-on learning opportunities as well as case studies from commercial and multifamily buildings. The Summit will provide education sessions\, hands-on Q&A and support\, an “innovation alley” showcasing products and services\, and a networking reception. \n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, visit https://mcenergysummit.org/

SUMMARY:Leaders in Energy – Regeneration Series: Electrify Everything
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Regeneration Series: Electrify Everything”  \nWebinar: Wednesday\, December 11\, from 1:00 to 2:15 pm ET \nThis virtual event is on electrification and its key role in decarbonizing our energy system. It’s the second webinar in LE’s Regeneration series inspired by Paul Hawken’s book\, “Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation” and his organization “Regeneration.” Both provide an encyclopedic list of solutions to address the climate crisis and the regeneration of planetary ecosystems.  \nScientists are expecting Earth’s global average temperature in 2024 to be the hottest on record\, surpassing 2023 as the titleholder\, with fossil fuels contributing to more than three-quarters of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We need to change how we use energy in our daily lives\, communities\, and collective society\, and we can do it. \nAccording to physicist Saul Griffith\, if we electrify the whole world economy\, using “clean” electricity and efficient technologies\, we would need less than half of the primary energy we currently use. It’s not a straight line\, but there are paths forward. For example: \n\nThe use of clean\, efficient electric alternatives in our homes and businesses\, e.g.\, appliances\, vehicles\, etc.\, could reduce nearly half our carbon emissions and buy time to handle sectors that are more difficult to decarbonize\, including industry\, agriculture\, freight transport\, and long-haul aviation.\nElectrifying everything will reduce overall energy use\, but still requires doubling the amount of electricity by 2050 to meet increased expected demand. \nWe need to account for data centers for artificial intelligence\, cryptocurrency computing\, and electric vehicles which are increasing demand.\nChanges to the consumer culture which presently eats up significant energy — via food/waste\, apparel\, travel choices\, and the individual ownership of products with planned obsolescence.\n\nRegister here: https://leadersinenergy.org/event/regeneration-series-electrify-everything-december-112024/
