SUMMARY:The Climate Mobilization: Leading with Vision: Imagining a Climate Positive and Resilient MoCo by 2030
DESCRIPTION:How does a County of 1 million+ residents go Climate Positive in a decade? \nThis is the challenge that Montgomery County\, MD\, effectively set itself in the Emergency Climate Mobilization Resolution (December 2017). And how does the County do this in ways that overcome social and racial injustices? What should guide the County in strengthening the resilience of our communities and ecosystems to increasingly frequent and intense risks and shocks triggered by dangerous climate change?\nJoin The Climate Mobilization MoCo for our next webinar \nLeading with Vision: Imagining a Climate Positive and Resilient MoCo by 2030 \nTuesday\, July 14  •  7:30 to 8:45 pm \nREGISTER \nOur proposition is that vision must guide form and function. We urge Montgomery County to frame the developing (Emergency) Climate Action and Resilience Plan with a vision that is created through active engagement with diverse groups across the County. A successful plan will significantly affect funding and investments in many of our communities. We need a compelling vision if we are to mobilize residents\, businesses\, unions\, civic associations and legislators to rise to the task ahead.  \nHerb Simmens\, author of A Climate Vocabulary of the Future\, will present a climate vision – prepared with the assistance of many in the climate community – for how the County can become Climate Positive in a decade while enhancing the well-being of county residents. Representatives from different stakeholder groups will respond\, and share their thoughts on the vision for the E-CARP. \nWe urge you to read the vision\, and believe you will find it of real value in imagining what a transformative future for our county might look like. We intend to share this discussion with the County\, and ask you to join us in demanding a vision-led plan. \nThis webinar is the second in TCM MoCo’s Emergency Climate and Resilience Action series. Over the coming months the series will focus on key issues that the county climate planning process should address. The next webinar in the series will focus on social and racial justice and climate planning. Please register here. You will receive a zoom link to join the webinar. \nAnd do share this invitation widely with friends\, family and colleagues!

SUMMARY:Faithful Green Leaders Training (Lower County)
DESCRIPTION:Faithful Green Leaders Training (Lower County) \nSunday\, July 12  • 10 am – 4:30 pm \nAdat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation\, 7727 Persimmon Tree Lane\, Bethesda\, MD 20817 \nJoin us for our Faithful Green Leaders Training\, a free one-day session\, followed by a series of monthly Green Team Learning Lab webinars. \n\nThe training is offered two times:  July 12th (Lower County) and September 12th (Upper County). To register please go to the link. I am hopeful that your “Green Team”  will have at least 2-3 persons!  \nI think any congregation will really flourish after they work on an action plan.  \n\n\n\nIn training your Green Team will identify “their environmental story” as it relates to them and the congregation.\n\n\nAction plan projects range from something small like a recycling effort or rain barrel installation to something larger like getting help with installing permeable sidewalks/driveways\, a rain garden and/or landscaping to control run-off.\n\n\nThe Green Team can even save on energy by investigating solar panel usage with our partner organization Interfaith Power & Light.\nIt all starts with your Green Teams one-day training which will provide them with a Faithful Green Leaders Handbook to help guide them through the process as their action plan develops. \n\nClick here to download the flyer to share with others in your congregation.  \n\n\nClick here to learn more about the training if you or any congregation members are interested. \nThanks and continue to bless and protect the earth!  Please feel free to pass along this information to anyone else that might be interested! \n\n**All attendees must come with at least 2 other people from their congregation\, because there is no such thing as “a team of 1.”\nIf you need help building your green team\, go here to find some helpful resources. \nSee flyer here for more information.  Questions? Email: GreenTeams@InterfaithChesapeake.org or call: 410-609-6852. \n

SUMMARY:350MoCo June Meeting: Topic—Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:350MoCo June Meeting: Topic—Racial Justice \nTuesday\, June 30  •  7 pm \nOur nation and our communities have been rocked over the last month by protests demanding justice for Black lives and an end to the structural racism that plagues our nation. 350MoCo is in strong support for the demands of the Movement for Black Lives\, and our members have participated in local protests and actions. We believe that racial justice is climate justice. The forces that make Black communities targets of police violence also leave them vulnerable to climate impacts on their health and wealth. \nJoin us for a special meeting on Tuesday\, June 30 to discuss 350.org’s commitment to racial justice. Dominique Thomas\, Regional Coordinator for 350.org\, will be joining us to share details of 350’s commitment\, and how we can continue this essential work. \nWe will also share details of our campaigns for a local Green New Deal and for action on fossil fuel divestment. \nPlease join us for this crucial conversation. Spanning three continents\, the film illustrates an ongoing catastrophe: fields full of garbage\, veritable mountains of trash\, rivers and seas clogged with waste\, and skies choked with the poisonous emissions from plastic production and processing. \nThe Story of Plastic features interviews with experts and activists on the front lines of the fight\, revealing the disastrous consequences of the flood of plastic smothering ecosystems and poisoning communities around the world\, as well as the global movement that is rising up in response. You can view the trailer here. \nThe Story of Plastic is about 90 minutes long. You can join us at the start time (6:30 p.m. ET/ 3:30 p.m. PT) to hear opening words from our speakers and view the film with us\, or you can watch the film on your own schedule with the link provided to registrants the Friday before the conversation. Then at 8:15 p.m. ET/ 5:15 p.m. PT\, join us for a conversation with Food & Water Action Organizing Director Emily Wurth\, California Director Alex Nagy\, New York Senior Organizer Eric Weltman\, and Pennsylvania Organizing Manager Megan McDonough. \nWe are highlighting this film because it delves into the connection between the fracking industry\, fossil fuel infrastructure\, and plastics production. This film has been approved for younger viewers\, and families are encouraged to watch together and contribute to the conversation. We hope you’ll join us for this special event. \n\nTo register: https://secure.foodandwateraction.org/act/story-of-plastic-film-screening-discussion?ms=onor_em_06042020_story-of-plastic&oms=onor_em_06042020_story-of-plastic \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:ANS Conservation Café: Grappling with racism\, diversity\, and justice in the environmental movement
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Café: Grappling with racism\, diversity\, and justice in the environmental movement \nThursday\, October 8 at 7:00 pm \nDid you know… \n\nThat many of the founders of the conservation movement were explicitly racist and linked white supremacy to their goals of preserving nature?\nThat the racist origins of the movement persist in implicit narratives\, mythologies\, and values that we don’t even realize are part of environmentalism today?\nThat while all people and cultures have connections to nature\, the environmental movement is far from representative of the diversity of the United States of America today?\nThat the modern environmental movement is increasingly reckoning with the need for justice for and amongst humans as a necessity for conserving nature into the future?\n\nWe need to talk about it! To be successful in preserving a healthy environment for people and wildlife\, we need everyone. And\, we need to listen\, really listen\, to one another. \nPlease join ANS for an evening of listening to some of our incredible regional experts on diversity\, equity\, justice\, and inclusion in environmentalism. Gabrielle Roffe will moderate this in-depth\, engaging conversation with environmental diversity\, equity\, and inclusion experts Chanté Coleman and Ruby Rivera. \nRegister Here! \nChanté Coleman serves as the Vice President of Equity and Justice at National Wildlife Federation\, where she leads the effort to fully operationalize equitable policies and practices and supports the organization to actively challenge systemic racism. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Ruby Rivera now lives in the Washington\, D.C. area\, where she works for The Nature Conservancy’s Global Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Team as a Conservation Partnerships Manager. \nGabrielle Roffe is the Manager of Equity and Community Engagement at Chesapeake Conservancy where she works in partnership with the National Park Service to promote inclusive stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
