SUMMARY:The Story of Plastic Community Film Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Plastic Community Film Screening and Conversation\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, June 16 \nTime: Film screening: 6:30 p.m. ET \nPost-film discussion: 8:15 p.m. ET  \nWhere: On your computer through Zoom. Link to join provided upon RSVP. \nWhat: Join Food & Water Action for a community screening of The Story of Plastic and a post-film discussion with policy experts and activists. \nFrom the makers of The Story of Stuff\, newly released film The Story of Plastic takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution and the worldwide effect it has on the health of our planet and the people who inhabit it. Spanning three continents\, the film illustrates an ongoing catastrophe: fields full of garbage\, veritable mountains of trash\, rivers and seas clogged with waste\, and skies choked with the poisonous emissions from plastic production and processing. \nThe Story of Plastic features interviews with experts and activists on the front lines of the fight\, revealing the disastrous consequences of the flood of plastic smothering ecosystems and poisoning communities around the world\, as well as the global movement that is rising up in response. You can view the trailer here. \nThe Story of Plastic is about 90 minutes long. You can join us at the start time (6:30 p.m. ET/ 3:30 p.m. PT) to hear opening words from our speakers and view the film with us\, or you can watch the film on your own schedule with the link provided to registrants the Friday before the conversation. Then at 8:15 p.m. ET/ 5:15 p.m. PT\, join us for a conversation with Food & Water Action Organizing Director Emily Wurth\, California Director Alex Nagy\, New York Senior Organizer Eric Weltman\, and Pennsylvania Organizing Manager Megan McDonough. \nWe are highlighting this film because it delves into the connection between the fracking industry\, fossil fuel infrastructure\, and plastics production. This film has been approved for younger viewers\, and families are encouraged to watch together and contribute to the conversation. We hope you’ll join us for this special event. \n\nTo register: https://secure.foodandwateraction.org/act/story-of-plastic-film-screening-discussion?ms=onor_em_06042020_story-of-plastic&oms=onor_em_06042020_story-of-plastic \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:ANS Conservation Café: Grappling with racism\, diversity\, and justice in the environmental movement
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Café: Grappling with racism\, diversity\, and justice in the environmental movement \nThursday\, October 8 at 7:00 pm \nDid you know… \n\nThat many of the founders of the conservation movement were explicitly racist and linked white supremacy to their goals of preserving nature?\nThat the racist origins of the movement persist in implicit narratives\, mythologies\, and values that we don’t even realize are part of environmentalism today?\nThat while all people and cultures have connections to nature\, the environmental movement is far from representative of the diversity of the United States of America today?\nThat the modern environmental movement is increasingly reckoning with the need for justice for and amongst humans as a necessity for conserving nature into the future?\n\nWe need to talk about it! To be successful in preserving a healthy environment for people and wildlife\, we need everyone. And\, we need to listen\, really listen\, to one another. \nPlease join ANS for an evening of listening to some of our incredible regional experts on diversity\, equity\, justice\, and inclusion in environmentalism. Gabrielle Roffe will moderate this in-depth\, engaging conversation with environmental diversity\, equity\, and inclusion experts Chanté Coleman and Ruby Rivera. \nRegister Here! \nChanté Coleman serves as the Vice President of Equity and Justice at National Wildlife Federation\, where she leads the effort to fully operationalize equitable policies and practices and supports the organization to actively challenge systemic racism. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Ruby Rivera now lives in the Washington\, D.C. area\, where she works for The Nature Conservancy’s Global Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Team as a Conservation Partnerships Manager. \nGabrielle Roffe is the Manager of Equity and Community Engagement at Chesapeake Conservancy where she works in partnership with the National Park Service to promote inclusive stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

SUMMARY:2020 Clean Water Art Contest Deadline
DESCRIPTION:2020 Clean Water Art Contest \nDeadline 4 pm EST\, April 30\, 2020 \nDid you know that most storm drains in Montgomery County lead directly to our streams?  No?  You are not alone! There is a BIG misconception that the water and trash that enters storm drains will be cleaned. \nThe truth is that the trash\, pollution\, chemicals and yard waste that flow into our storm drains eventually also flow into our local streams\, which then pollutes our rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. \nWhat can we do about this problem?  The answer is educate! \nArt for the Environment: The 2020 Contest\nA key way that you can help us educate others is through your art.  Use your creative skills to spread the word to stop litter and other pollution from ending up in our environment and eventually ending up in our waterways! \nThe Clean Water Art Contest seeks to use art to educate the public about the connection between our communities\, streams\, and the Bay.  The winners will see their art painted on storm drains. This year we expanded the  places where art may be displayed to include trash cans and bus ads in the County!  Because of this we re-branded the name of the contest to the Clean Water Art Contest. \nThe 2019 winners had their art recreated on storm drains throughout Germantown.  Many people walk past the art each year and inspired by the art to protect our environment and waterways.  Artists of all ages participated. \nFor more information: https://mygreenmontgomery.org/ART/

SUMMARY:350MoCo April Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:350MoCo April Monthly Meeting \nTuesday\, April 28  •  7:00 – 9:00 pm \n \n  \n350MoCo successfully completed our first Steering Committee election. We conducted a membership drive\, and then\, over five days\, members elected the new Steering Committee. Given the challenging times and major distractions we all face\, it’s perhaps not surprising that our election did not bring out new candidates. In any case\, the current Steering Committee continues to stand up for the work — and it now has been elected by members\, rather than chosen by networking.   \n\nPlease meet the newly elected Steering Committee\, with their respective areas of focus:\n\nJeff Weisner — President and New Member Development Lead\nKristin Cook — Communications Lead\nDave Goodrich — Treasurer and Secretary\nLisa Jo Finstrom — Meeting Management Lead\nChristine Pendzich — Coalition Building Lead\n\nRick Sullivan will continue to work closely with the Steering Committee as lead on labor union relations\, divestment campaign lead and music guru. Rick serves as a model of how any member can offer to set up a campaign on any issue related to our Mission. Please feel free to suggest campaign ideas to any one of the SC members.\n\nAs we undertake this transition we want to take a moment to thank Ellen Post and Geoff Kidd\, two longtime Steering Committee members who each chose not to run for this cycle. They have both been involved with 350MoCo from its earliest days and have contributed immensely to our work. DESCRIPTION:Faithful Green Leaders Training (Upper County) \nSaturday\, September 12 (was April 25)  • 10 am – 4:30 pm \nRedirect: https://onemontgomerygreen.org/index.php/calendarevent/faithful-green-leaders-training-upper-county-2/ \nBecause of the uncertainty & concern regarding COVID-19 in the area\, this event has been postponed to September 12th\, 2020.   \nEpworth United Methodist Church\, 9008 Rosemont Dr\, Gaithersburg\, MD 20877 \nJoin us for our Faithful Green Leaders Training\, a free one-day session\, followed by a series of monthly Green Team Learning Lab webinars. \n\nThe training is offered two times:  July 12th (Lower County) and September 12th (Upper County). To register please go to the link. I am hopeful that your “Green Team”  will have at least 2-3 persons!  \nI think any congregation will really flourish after they work on an action plan.  \n\n\n\nIn training your Green Team will identify “their environmental story” as it relates to them and the congregation.\n\n\nAction plan projects range from something small like a recycling effort or rain barrel installation to something larger like getting help with installing permeable sidewalks/driveways\, a rain garden and/or landscaping to control run-off.\n\n\nThe Green Team can even save on energy by investigating solar panel usage with our partner organization Interfaith Power & Light.\nIt all starts with your Green Teams one-day training which will provide them with a Faithful Green Leaders Handbook to help guide them through the process as their action plan develops. \n\n\nClick here to download the flyer to share with others in your congregation.  \n\n\nClick here to learn more about the training if you or any congregation members are interested. \n\n\n\nThanks and continue to bless and protect the earth!  Please feel free to pass along this information to anyone else that might be interested! \n\n**All attendees must come with at least 2 other people from their congregation\, because there is no such thing as “a team of 1.”\nIf you need help building your green team\, go here to find some helpful resources. \nSee flyer here for more information.  Questions? Email: GreenTeams@InterfaithChesapeake.org or call: 410-609-6852. \n
