SUMMARY:Black Cemeteries (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Black Cemeteries (virtual event)\n\nBy Rock Creek Conservancy\nThursday\, April 21  |  5:30pm – 7:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the 160th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation in April\, exploring the relationship between Black cemeteries and Rock Creek Park is an important way to understand the legacies of the emancipated individuals buried in these cemeteries. Understanding Black cemeteries can be complex\, but looking at how the land is recognized and how people view those buried in these cemeteries gives us better insight. Often the case with African American cemeteries\, remains have not been treated with care. Understanding how cemeteries fit into our park history (and people’s expectations of recreation in them) is key to how we can reconcile and restore past injustices. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Rock Creek Conservancy\, Rock Creek Park\, and cemetery experts as we host a virtual conversation about the intersection of race\, history\, and Rock Creek Park. \nThe discussion will feature Lisa Fager\, Executive Director of the Mt. Zion – Female Union Band Society Historic Memorial Park\, Inc; Mary Belcher\, member of the Walter Pierce Park Cemeteries Project; and Dr. Jarrod Burks\, an archaeologist with expertise in Black cemeteries. The panel\, moderated by Julia Washburn\, superintendent of Rock Creek Park\, will explore issues and opportunities related to Black cemeteries in and near Rock Creek Park. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:The Climate Mobilization MoCo Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:THIS IS A CLIMATE EMERGENCY!!\nThe Climate Mobilization MoCo Monthly Meeting\nThursday\, April 14\, 7:30 to 9:00 PM \nBarbara Coufal\, Co-Chair of Citizens Against Beltway Expansion (CABE) and an experienced advocate\, will discuss CABE’s work to stop the Maryland Department of Transportation’s plan to add toll lanes to I-270 and to the Beltway. Allies working with CABE include: the MD Sierra Club\, the League of Women Voters\, Don’tWiden270.org\, the National Parks Conservation Association\, the Coalition for Smarter Growth and many others. \nQuestions covered include:\n       \n•  Can we afford a $50 toll which will impact the most vulnerable and marginalized communities?\n•  Why were no other transportation alternatives considered?\n•  Will the adverse effect on people of color and destruction of waterways\, forests and stream valley parks support our clean air and clear water goals?\n•  Why does the MDOT’s environmental review not include an analysis of the impact of the projects on greenhouse gas emissions? \nMontgomery County’s Climate Emergency Resolution is to decrease GHG by 80% by 2027 and 100% by 2035.  We have no hope of reaching those goals if we widen 495/270 as it has been shown that widening roads induces demand. \nPlease Join our  Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82701420508?pwd=NldqUDN5VG9XRVdMS2pxZStGTnZaZz09\nMeeting ID: 827 0142 0508 Passcode: 494449\nOne tap mobile +13017158592\,\,82701420508#\,\,\,\,*494449# US (Washington DC)\n+13126266799\,\,82701420508#\,\,\,\,*494449# US (Chicago)\nDial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 827 0142 0508 Passcode: 494449 Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kbHtmBUTTM

DESCRIPTION:Please join us Thursday\, April 7 for a conversation with Sierra Club policy\, advocacy\, and legislative leaders. The next few months are a critical window to pass the most ambitious climate justice bill in history – creating millions of clean energy and care jobs\, addressing racial and economic inequality\, and finally tackling the climate crisis at the scale required. At the same time\, President Biden can use the power of his office to secure bold executive actions for climate\, and we are keeping up the momentum in support of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic nomination. \nDate: Thursday\, April 7\nTime: 12:00 pm ET\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDalal Aboulhosn\nDeputy Director of Policy\, Advocacy and Legal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelinda Pierce\nLegislative Director\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen Beachy\nDirector\, A Living Economy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMiranda Ehrlich\nFederal Field Director\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt Sierra Club\, we are a ‘power-ful’ collective of millions of changemakers dedicated to making a better tomorrow for our families\, our communities\, and our planet. SUMMARY:Climate Rally outside MCPS Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:Rally at MCPS Headquarters on April 1 (because climate change is no joke) \nClimate Rally outside of MCPS Headquarters\n850 Hungerford Dr.\, Rockville\nFriday\, April 1 at 1:30 pm\nCome support our students next Friday\, April 1 at 1:30 PM (early release day for students) at the headquarters of MCPS in Rockville. The BIPOC Green New Deal Interns have organized a rally calling for decisive action from MCPS on climate!   \nWe will gather in the parking lot and listen to speakers and conclude with a march down Mannakee to Hungerford Drive/Route 355. Some of our supporters may risk arrest as we block that busy street.  Your active support sends a strong message to both the youth organizers and MCPS. \nWHY: MCPS lags behind even the less than adequate performance of the rest of the County in this climate emergency. MCPS only purchases 38% renewable energy vs 100% for other County buildings. Almost all MCPS schools are gas-heated. MCPS continues to build new schools with methane furnaces. \nHOW YOU CAN HELP: Please sign up and show up to stand and support MoCo youth in demanding MCPS get serious about climate change: http://bit.ly/4122DemoSignUp \nWith your help\, the Interns will now shine a bright light on the forgotten half of County operations — the schools! \nQuestions? Contact Jim at jimwdriscoll@gmail.com.  Thank you for caring! \nPS) The Interns’ efforts and pleas have made the news! NPR environmental reporter Jacob Fenston covered the interns’ story and then subsequently published this article on March 9: https://bit.ly/GNDprotests.
