SUMMARY:The Climate Mobilization MoCo Chapter – 2020 Strategy Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Climate Mobilization MoCo Chapter\n2020 Strategy Meeting \nSunday\, January 12 | 2 – 4 pm\nTemple Shalom\, 8401 Grubb Road\, Chevy Chase\, MD 20815\n \nOxford Dictionaries declared ‘climate emergency’ the word of 2019. We desperately need ‘bold and ambitious climate emergency action’ to be the phrase that defines 2020. Join us in January to develop TCM MoCo’s strategy to mobilize a critical mass of County residents to get involved in the work of the Climate Emergency.\n \nTCM MoCo in 2020 \nWe encourage all of you to join us in-person on the 12th of January to shape the TCM MoCo strategy for the coming year. \n 2019 was a busy year of action\, with a number of you participating in County Climate Action Plan workgroups; protesting with Extinction Rebellion in D.C. and Rockville; supporting the MoCo Students on Climate; and leading and participating in the Silver Spring Climate Town Hall in September. In recent weeks\, TCM has played a role in delaying indefinitely a vote by the Bureau of Public Works on Governor Hogan’s plan to widen I-270 and the Beltway.  In addition\, the Montgomery County Council has recently voted to prioritize establishing a local Community Choice Energy program\, if approved by the Maryland legislature and signed into law in early 2020. \nHowever\, these initiatives don’t translate into enough progress to restore a safe climate. The planet’s climate and ecological breakdown has only accelerated in the past two years since Montgomery County adopted the first climate emergency resolution in the nation. The development and implementation of the County’s Climate Action Plan will move forward\, but it is a deliberate and slow process. Many more residents and communities need to be mobilized to push the County further faster. \n At our TCM MoCo meeting on the 12th\, we will develop our goals and strategies for 2020 and beyond\, re-examine our organizational structure\, and discuss plans for effective communication with each other\, in person and digitally. The intent is to facilitate increased participation of current members\, explore ways to attract new members\, and expand engagement and partnership with other local organizations around the climate emergency. \nIf you would like to confirm your participation in the meeting\, ask a question\, or volunteer to help plan the meeting\, send us an email here.

We encourage all arborists\, landscape industry and environmental/green industry professionals\, engineers\, designers\, housing developers\, and interested citizens to take advantage of this opportunity to learn new techniques and concepts on what can be done to ensure the survival of trees in our built environment \nAll raised funds support this event. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/trees-matter-presents-green-cities-summit-tickets-67241881277

SUMMARY:Funeral For Future Strike at US Capitol
DESCRIPTION:Funeral For Future Strike at US Capitol\nFriday\, November 29\, 2019  •  12:30 PM\nLocation:   United States Capitol  •  1 First St SE\, Washington\, DC 20004\nHost Contact Info:  kallan@fridaysforfutureusa.org\nPlease join us on Friday participate in the Fridays for Future Global Day of Action and to demand action on the climate crisis. Wear black and bring a sign and your grief and outrage. \nWe’ll gather on the Southeast lawn of the Capitol to eulogize and mourn all that has been lost and all that is threatened by the climate crisis. All those with hopes and dreams who cherish the future are invited to gather in the shadow of the Halls of Congress. The ceremonial closed-casket funeral will conclude with a funeral procession through the streets of Washington\, DC. \n“Petroleum is a plague. It is the black death of our generation\,” said youth organizer and weekly striker Sophia Geiger\, 17. “We have the ability to control and cure it\, but we are not taking action. We are simply letting it destroy our world and threaten all life.”   \n“I strike every week because it is all I can do. I can’t even vote\, but I am already mourning my future. How can I plan for college\, a career\, or a family?” said Benson. \n“We’re bringing the loss of our future to the steps of the Capitol because they need to prepare to own this death\,” claims organizer Maddie Graham\, 17. “We need systemic change. Congress has been feeding our fossil fuel addiction. They know they are killing our future\, but they won’t take action to save it.” \nFor press inquires please contact sophia@fridaysforfutureusa.org \nVisit:  https://actionnetwork.org/events/fridays-for-future-strike-at-us-capitol-8

SUMMARY:Cocktails and discussion on synthetic playgrounds and fields
DESCRIPTION:Cocktails and discussion on synthetic playgrounds and fields\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres and a discussion on synthetic turf fields and tire-based playgrounds.\n\n\n\n\n\nFri\, November 15\, 2019  •  6:00 PM – 8:00 PM \nAddress will be provided after registration:\nPrivate Home  •  3 miles outside of the Beltway  •  Potomac\, MD 20854 \nSpace at this cocktail party and discussion is limited\, so please register. Address will provided after registration. \n6-8 PM: Mix and Mingle \nWelcome / Introducing the Issue Diana Conway\, President Safe Healthy Playing Fields Inc. \nPEER and Artificial Turf Tim Whitehouse\, Executive Director\, PEER \nWhat We have Found on Artificial Turf Kyla Bennett\, PhD\, Director of Science Policy\, PEER \nObservations Kathy Michels\, PhD \nQuestions and Discussion \nA recent PEER investigation conducted with The Ecology Center has found alarming toxic chemicals in the artificial turf blades and in the turf backing\, raising new public health and environmental concerns\, including the potential that these chemicals leach from turf fields into nearby waters. The chemicals discovered in the turf blades belong to a class on chemicals called PFAS\, or “forever chemicals\,” because they do not break down in the environment and bio-accumulate in the food chain. Human exposure to PFAS is associated with cancer\, birth defects\, and other troubling impairments. \nCurrently\, there are at least 13\,000 synthetic turf sports fields in the U.S.\, with more than a thousand new installations each year\, producing industry revenue of an estimated $2.5 billion annually in the US alone. Many groups\, including PEER\, have raised concerns for years about the health effects of artificial turf. These surfaces are typically made of a plastic synthetic grass-like layer sitting atop several feet of gravel\, and covered with about 40\,000 shredded waste tires per standard sized field. Under active use like running and\, sliding the tire crumb breaks down into smaller particles of tire crumb. As a result athletes face constant\, sometimes daily exposure through inhalation\, ingestion and dermal uptake. The tire particles also lodge in athletes’ shoes\, clothing\, hair\, nose\, eyes and ears. \nUsed waste tires are also ubiquitous in playgrounds for our very youngest children who engage in hand-to-mouth behavior\, putting them at very high risk of direct ingestion\, in addition to inhalation and dermal uptake. The result is that our children are exposed\, from very early years through college or beyond\, to everything shredded tires and plastic grass fields have to offer such as the newly documented PFAS\, in addition to the known toxicity from lead\, arsenic\, cadmium\, chromium\, mercury and a number of dangerous hydrocarbons. This exposure is occurring in unstudied combinations over time and often in high heat\, with close and frequent contact\, at taxpayer expense and without disclosure or consent of the public. \n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Conservation Montgomery 2020 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Conservation Montgomery’s 10th Anniversary Annual Meeting\nMelanie Choukas-Bradley is our 2020 speaker\n\n\nJoin us on Nov. 13th at 7 pm!\n\n\nThe coronavirus has caused us to move our annual meeting to a virtual format this year. But we’re still celebrating our 10th anniversary in grand style.\n\n\n\nJoin us to celebrate Conservation Montgomery’s 10th anniversary and our wild home with Melanie Choukas-Bradley\, author of several nature books\, including two published in 2020: Resilience—Connecting with Nature in a Time of Crisis and Finding Solace at Theodore Roosevelt Island. Melanie is also the author of books about forest bathing\, Sugarloaf Mountain\, Rock Creek Park\, and the trees of Washington. She lives in Chevy Chase and for 20 years resided in the Agricultural Reserve\, where she and her husband\, Jim\, still own working farmland. Melanie is on the Advisory Committee for the Montgomery Countryside Alliance and she has led many tours of the Ag Reserve for Smithsonian Associates and the Audubon Naturalist Society as well as forest bathing walks at Brookside Gardens.\n\n\nMelanie will inspire us to connect more deeply with the beauty and wonder of Montgomery County’s green spaces\, including our own backyards\, as we celebrate our ten years of activism and stewardship. It’s especially important\, in these stressful times\, that we take time to pause and connect with the natural beauty around us with all of our senses and open hearts. During the evening we may even do a little “forest bathing” together. Our talk will be accompanied by slides.\n\n\nMake your reservation here. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/3865777950105559\n\n\nBelow: Melanie Choukas-Bradley’s latest book\, at left. At right: the author. and our 10th anniversary speaker.
