SUMMARY:US Youth Climate Strike at the Capitol
DESCRIPTION:US Youth Climate Strike at the Capitol\nFriday\, September 20  •  10 am\n\nSeptember 20\, at 10 am\, there will be student led climate protests at the Capitol. At 8 am\, there will be send off rallies at Metro stations\, including Silver Spring.  For more information on local actions\, contact Takoma Park Mobilization Environmental Committee at environment@tpmobilization.org.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMISSION: \nWe\, the youth of America\, are striking because the science says we have just a few years to transform our energy system\, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions\, and prevent the worst effects of climate change. We are striking because our world leaders have yet to acknowledge\, prioritize\, or properly address our climate crisis. We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation —especially communities of color\, disabled communities\, and low- income communities—  are already disproportionately impacted by climate change. We are striking because if the social order is disrupted by our refusal to attend school\, then the system is forced to face the climate crisis and enact change. With our futures at stake\, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people. We are striking for the Green New Deal\, for a fair and just transition to a 100% renewable economy\, and for ending the creation of additional fossil fuel infrastructure. Additionally\, we believe the climate crisis should be declared a national emergency because we are running out of time. \nFor more information\, https://www.youthclimatestrikeus.org/ \n\n

SUMMARY:GROUND WAR: When Playing Fields Become Battlefields (Pesticide Documentary)
DESCRIPTION:GROUND WAR: When Playing Fields Become Battlefields (Pesticide Documentary)\nMust Watch! What’s the true nature of the chemical war with the ground\, exposing our families and pets\, washing off in our waterways\, and affecting wildlife?    \nSun\, Jun 30\, 2019  6:15 – 9:15 PM   \nArts Barn (Theater) Gaithersburg\, 311 Kent Square Road\, Gaithersburg\, MD 20878 \n  \nSierra Club Maryland Chapter is please to co-sponsor the Maryland premiere of the new pesticide documentary\, GROUND WAR. The free showing is hosted by Kentlands Community Foundation’s GO GREEN program with the support of additional co-sponsors: City of Gaithersburg\, Safe Grow Montgomery\, Beyond Pesticides\, MOM’s Organic Market\, Muddy Branch Alliance.  \n  \nABOUT THE FILM: Ground War is filmmaker Andrew Nisker’s investigation into the death of his father. Nisker’s inquiry takes him deep into the world of golf\, chemical lobbying\, and citizen activism. Through his investigation\, Nisker learns that the rampant use of pesticides around the world may be far more damaging than we understand. \nWhat chance do we have at creating a safer world for our children and ourselves? The answer may lie with the incredible people he encounters along his journey. \nRecent Montgomery County legislation that limits pesticide use in lawns is part of this documentary\, along with highlighting local Safe Grow Montgomery coalition’s advocacy on this law. This film was shown earlier this spring at the DC Environmental Film Festival. \nDoor open at 6:15pm\, light refreshments and wine will be served as part of a fundraiser. Come early to visit and talk to sponsors and activists\, and pick up relevant information at the sponsor tables\, followed by 7:00pm documentary showing. There will be a discussion after the film with the filmmaker\, Andrew Nisker and local environmental advocates. Donations will be accepted for the filmmaker Andrew Nisker. \nMore information about the documentary and the trailer\, visit: http://groundwar.org \nShowing is free\, however seating is limited. Please RSVP tickets at: bit.ly/groundwarmd \nEmail questions or cancellations to: Ling.Tan@mdsierra.org

The roof showcases four types of production: (1) high-revenue plants (e.g.\, herbs\, greens); (2) high-nutrition plants that can cover the entire range of dietary needs (e.g.\, tomatoes\, peppers\, chards\, cabbages); (3) pollinator plants that ensure bee health in our urban environment; and (4) low-maintenance plants that help capture rain\, reduce runoff\, cool buildings in the summer\, and provide insulation in the winter. In addition to food production\, the Green Roof is also used to conduct research on plant varieties that thrive in roof environments.  \nPAYMENT\nThis event is FREE and open to the public.
