SUMMARY:DC EcoWomen :June 2021 EcoHour
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, June 15th at 6:30pm for DC EcoWomen’s signature EcoHour for a conversation with Carolina Powell\, Primate Keeper at Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Mentorship Director and founding member of the Association of Minority Zoo and Aquarium Professionals (AMZAP).\n\nABOUT CAROLINA:  \nCarolina Powell is a first-generation college graduate born to Colombian parents and raised by her single mother. Growing up\, Carolina witnessed the hardships her mother went through and was always given the same advice: “Go to school so you can be successful and don’t have to endure what we are now.” \nBecause of this\, she was conflicted when she decided to change her career aspirations from veterinarian to zookeeper. The journey to becoming a keeper was difficult and often filled with doubt. However\, she was given her “big break” when she was offered a position at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore in 2014. \nIncluding her time as an intern\, Carolina has been in the zoological field for eight years and currently works as a primate keeper at Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Throughout her career\, she has worked with a variety of species ranging from goats and cows to lemurs\, chimpanzees\, leopards\, gorillas\, and orangutans. As a keeper\, Carolina is in charge of record keeping\, medicating\, training\, and basic animal husbandry such as feeding and cleaning.  One of her favorite parts of her job is getting to train animals to participate in their own medical care. Behaviors like voluntary injections\, ultrasound\, and blood draws are all extremely important to monitoring the health of these animals. \nCarolina is also passionate about helping individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups get into the field and was thrilled when she was approached by curator\, Craig Saffoe\, to join him as a founding member of the Association of Minority Zoo and Aquarium Professionals (AMZAP). Since its inception\, Carolina has taken on the role of Director of Mentorship\, where she focuses on helping aspiring zoo and aquarium professionals get matched with mentors currently within the field. \n*Please note: DC EcoWomen EcoHours are open to women and those who identify as women\, including members of the LGBTQ community and gender fluid individuals.

SUMMARY:Electrifying Our Buildings: Challenges and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The move to clean energy and renewable sources of power is driving a move to electrification in the building stock. One of the real-world challenges facing owners and managers is that in a typical building\, a substantial part of a building’s load is for heating and cooling – typically provided by fossil fuels such as natural gas. Building owners are struggling to find solutions that meet their needs and are cost-effective. This panel discussion will explore options available today and different approaches to meet carbon goals\, featuring building owners and design teams that are leading the market to achieve electrification goals. Speakers: Paul Donohoo-Vallet\, DOE; Christos Chrysiliou\, Los Angeles Unified School District; Kent Peterson\, P2S Inc

SUMMARY:Montgomery County Releases Draft Vision Zero 2030 Action Plan & Announces Listening Sessions to Gather Community Input
DESCRIPTION:Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich has released the Draft Vision Zero 2030 Action Plan and Fiscal Years 2022-23 Work Plan for public review and input. The Vision Zero 2030 Action Plan builds on the County’s previous Vision Zero and Pedestrian Safety plans and lays out the work ahead to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. \nFeedback on the plan starts today and will run through early June. Between April 28 and May 26\, five virtual listening sessions will be held to gather input on the plan. \n“We need to be innovative in using more low-cost interventions to improve more roads and intersections every year. This plan does that by expanding Vision Zero into more of the County’s maintenance programs. We need to hear from County residents to make the Vision Zero Plan stronger and meet the needs of everyone regardless of how they get around the County.” – County Executive Marc Elrich \nVision Zero Coordinator Wade Holland will lead the series of virtual listening sessions. Each session is focused on one of the regional service areas of the County. Residents do not need to live in the service area to attend. Each listening session will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held via Zoom (registration is required): \nMay 26 – East County \nA copy of the plan\, access to the feedback survey\, and details on how to register for each listening session are available at:  montgomerycountymd.gov/visionzero/2030plan.html \n

SUMMARY:Women in Green Power Breakfast: Reflections on Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for May 26th for annual U.S. Green Building Council’s\, National Capital Region’s Women in Green (Virtual) Power Breakfast. This yearly influential event now enjoying its National ten-year anniversary\, has never had more importance than it does this year\, a year that has tested women’s resilience like never before. Hear from women who have navigated the troubled waters brought on by the pandemic and listen to stories of their steadfastness and strength. \nUSGBC’s own survey on women in the workforce revealed 62% of respondents agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic is negatively impacting workplace equity. The United Nations also cautioned that COVID-19 could undo decades of meaningful progress around gender equality. With women’s workforce participation at an all-time low\, how can we find a “better normal” and help reverse this disturbing trend. Together we will focus not only on how we survive\, but also how we CAN thrive. \n\n\nSpeakers:\n\nKim Brown – DPR Construction\nLily Terango – GBCI\nLindsey Shaw – Department of Environmental Protection\, Montgomery County\, MD\nRachel Nicely – Sustainable Building Partners\n\nModerator:\n\nSeema Wadhwa – Net Positive Solutions\n\n\n\n\nWe have a scholarship opportunity for Students and Emerging Professionals! Provided by our Scholarship Sponsors DPR Construction and Sustainable Building Partners. \nApplications can be submitted HERE! They will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

SUMMARY:EcoWomen EcoHour
DESCRIPTION:For our May 18th EcoHour\, join us to hear from Sarah K. Mock\, author of the newly published Farm (And Other F Words). The seed for Sarah K Mock’s passion for farming was planted on her family’s farm in Wyoming. As it grew\, so too did her need to find the answer to a critical question: is it possible to farm without exploiting farmers\, farmworkers\, the environment\, or communities? Mock’s search for answers took her around the globe\, working in and around agriculture for non-profits\, government organizations\, Silicon Valley companies\, the national news media\, and directly with farms.

SUMMARY:2021 Montgomery County Energy Summit
DESCRIPTION:2021 Montgomery County Energy Summit \nTUESDAY\, MAY 4 & THURSDAY\, MAY 6\, 2021 \nHosted by Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection \n\n\n& USGBC National Capital Region \n  \n\nABOUT THE SUMMIT \n\n\n\n\nFor the past seven years and counting\, the Summit has annually offered cutting-edge education focused on the latest trends in green building\, energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, and related topics pertinent to commercial\, multifamily\, and residential projects in Montgomery County. Our target audience includes building owners\, property managers\, developers\, energy contractors\, and other sustainability professionals working in Montgomery County and the larger DMV area. Last year’s virtual event brought out nearly 330 attendees. \nThis year’s Summit will take place virtually May 4-6. The theme for 2021 is “Resiliency\, from Building to Community.” We will explore strategies\, technologies\, and case studies focused on enhancing the resiliency of the commercial\, multifamily\, and residential built environment. Not only must we adapt to changing climate hazards in our buildings\, but our economy and public health must become more resilient as well. Together\, our community can adapt and become more resilient against changes to our regional and global climate\, while striving to reach the County’s ambitious goal of zero carbon emissions by 2035. \nThe Summit will include breakout education sessions\, a keynote address\, topical networking salons\, interactive brown bag lunches. All education sessions will be approved for GBCI and AIA continuing education credits. \n\n\n\nFOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER:\nhttps://www.mcenergysummit.org/

SUMMARY:The Capital Area Solar Co-op is officially open!
DESCRIPTION:In these challenging times\, our work to create an equitable energy system continues. \nWe want everyone to have control over their energy production\, with solar on every rooftop and money in every pocket. Solar co-ops are a big part of this work. \nThe solar co-op will make it easier for you and your neighbors in Maryland to go solar! \nJoin our free Webinar to learn more! \nWebinars are free and open to anyone interested in going solar in Montgomery\, Prince George’s\, or Frederick Counties. Registration is required. \nHere’s what you can expect:\nYou’ll learn about going solar ☀️ — the technology\, benefits\, and considerations. \nYou’ll get to ask all your questions about going solar and connect with your neighbors who are curious about it too. \nWe’ll celebrate the launch of the Capital Area Solar Co-op. (The co-op is a way to go solar alongside a group of neighbors. It’s free to join and members get support from our solar experts.
