SUMMARY:Dry Shade Gardening Talk hosted by Silver Spring Garden Club
DESCRIPTION:Dry Shade Gardening Talk hosted by Silver Spring Garden Club\n\nJanuary 28* @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm •  Doors open at 7:30pm\n*Due to the Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday Monday\, we are meeting a week later than our normal “third Monday of the month.” \nBrookside Gardens Visitors Center/Education Building\, 1800 Glenallan Avenue\, Wheaton\, Maryland \nThe Silver Spring Garden Club invites you to a talk on Dry Shade Gardening. Dealing with dry shade is a common challenge of many local gardeners. Large trees are wonderful\, but they can quickly suck up all your garden’s resources leaving little for the understory plantings. Kathy Jentz will talk about design choices\, soil amendments\, and proven plant choices—as well as some inventive dry shade space substitutions. \n\n\n\nKathy Jentz is editor and publisher of Washington Gardener Magazine. Her mission is to turn black thumbs green. A life-long gardener\, Kathy believes that growing plants should be stress-free and enjoyable. Her philosophy is inspiration over perspiration. She is the President of the Silver Spring Garden Club Club and on the board of several other clubs and organizations. \nKathy appears on regular gardening guest spots on international garden podcasts as well as on WTOP and WOWD-LP radio stations in Washington\, DC. She is currently the Green Media columnist for the Mid-Atlantic Grower newspaper and she also edits the quarterly Water Garden Journal\, the official publication of the International Waterlily & Water Gardening Society. \nREFRESHMENTS will be provided after the talk by the following Silver Spring Garden Club members: Doreen Hardware\, Sue Smith\, and Elaine Ellis. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. \nYou can join/renew the Silver Spring Garden Club for just $10 a year for individual or $15 per couple/household. Bring a check made out to “SSGC” to our meeting and you are all set through 2019! \nSee the Facebook event page here – https://www.facebook.com/events/557782714695042/

SUMMARY:Innovative Clean Energy Project Financing
DESCRIPTION:Innovative Clean Energy Project Financing \nThursday\, January 24\, 2019 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM \nEnergy and sustainability solutions are rarely sold in simple one-off sales transactions. Energy and sustainability projects are often financed due to their large size and long duration. Also\, there are often complex public financing and tax-based incentive options to sweeten the deals. So\, what does that mean to those of us trying to launch solutions into the market\, build startups\, and change the world? We need Innovative Financing Solutions. \nOn January 24\, you need to be at the 5th annual Leaders in Energy / Potential Energy co-sponsored social-panel event at Clarendon Presbyterian Church. LE and PEDC will be bringing together the dream team of innovative energy project financing. Come listen to and meet experts from across the region to help get your products and solutions into the market by understanding the levers of project finance. \nLearned panelists will be covering innovations such as hands-on experience with the largest PACE project in Maryland\, the latest on the new DC Green Bank as well as Opportunity Zones across the region\, and large asset financing. Esteemed panelists will be announced on a rolling basis. \nSee our current speaker line-up here. Early bird through January 11th. Pizza and beverages included in ticket. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:350 MoCo Monthly Meeting \nTuesday\, January 15  •  7:00 – 9:00 pm\nLittle Falls Library\, 5501 Massachusetts Ave.\, Bethesda\, MD \nOur next meeting on Tuesday\, Jan. 15th will include a presentation from Elizabeth Bunn of the Labor Network for Sustainability about the upcoming Transit Equity Day event\, of which we are a cosponsor. We are excited to be building connections through this event with labor and social justice movements around the County and emphasizing the links between climate justice and transit equity. Here’s where you come in:  We need several volunteers to make this event effective and powerful so please join us to learn more! \nAlso speaking at the meeting will be Emily Frias of CCAN on their two campaigns for this year’s MD legislative session – the No New Fossil Fuels campaign and the Clean Energy Jobs Act. The NNFF campaign seeks to establish legislation requiring public input on any new fossil fuel infrastructure plans in MD. This would stop the Hogan administration from green-lighting yet more LNG pipelines through our state! \nhttps://www.350moco.org/

SUMMARY:Learn how you can MakeSoil & help reverse climate change!
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to MakeSoil and reverse global warming! \nWHEN: Saturday\, December 8\, 2:00 – 4:00pm \nWHERE: Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center\, 4850 Edgemoor Lane\, Bethesda Conf. Room A (near the Bethesda Metro)  \nPlease join me on SATURDAY DEC. 8 @2pm to meet Josh Whiton\, founder of MakeSoil.org and learn how his online tool can help us compost our food scraps\, build community\, and reverse global warming!  \nEvery day\, Montgomery COunty residents throw thousands of pounds of compostable kitchen scraps into the garbage. That trash is burned in the Dickerson incinerator\, producing toxins\, CO2\, and other greenhouse gases.  By composting those scraps\, we can reduce pollution\, build healthy soil\, AND help draw CO2 out of the atmosphere!  \nBut not everyone has the time or energy to compost at their our home. That’s where MakeSoil.org comes in. Make Soil is an online tool that helps connect composters (“soil makers”) with people who want to contribute to composting but can’t do it themselves (“soil supporters”). Like community solar\, which allows everyone to benefit from solar energy even if they don’t have an available rooftop\, MakeSoil helps people who don’t have yard space support composting in their neighborhoods.  \nI met Josh at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco in Sept and was very excited by his presentation and website. Join us on Saturday to hear about his new project – leave with info about how YOU can get started making soil and help other do it too! \nQuestions? Email me at danielle.meitiv@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:11th Annual NEA-AGF will be on Thursday\, December 6th\, 2018\nWednesday\, December 6  •  11:30am – 2:00pm\nNEA Headquarters\, 1201 16th St.\, NW\,  Washington\, DC 20036\n\nGroups Attending This Years Fair and Gifts Are Up to Date! \nShopping List is Ready!! \nWe wish to thank the following who made the fair so successful: \n\nNational Education Association\nNEA Green Initiative Program\nNEA Print Media Production Unit\nNEA Facility Services\nAlternative Gifts of Greater Washington\n\n\nWhat is an alternative gift?\nDoes your uncle really need another tie? Why not give him a gift that aligns with his passion for the\nenvironment? \n\nYour best friend was a teacher all her life. What if you could find a gift that supports literacy for children in under served neighborhoods? \n\nYour spouse is concerned about all the people affected by recent disasters and you want to give them gifts that will warm their hearts. What if you could give them a gift that sent needed support to those dealing with the disaster?\n\nBuying alternative gifts is an inspiring\, meaningful and easy way to do your holiday shopping. An alternative gift supports a direct need for a person or community in need\, such as asthma medication for someone who cannot afford it\, books for a child in transitional housing\, or work clothes for a newly employed person. \n\nWhen you buy an alternative gift you receive an insert describing the gift and the organization and programs it benefits. You can present this to your friends or family that says a “gift has been made in their honor”.\n\nIt’s a win-win-win event.  Those in need get support\,the person receiving the Alternative Gift knows you got them something and you get to spend your money in a way that makes a difference in someone’s life.\n\n\nhttp://nea-agf.info/
