SUMMARY:Meet the Watersheds Virtual Green Drinks Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we “Meet the Watersheds” of Montgomery County and the groups that are working to keep them clean and healthy.\n\n\nNOTE: This event rescheduled from Thursday\, March 25\, to Wednesday\, April 21.\n\n  \n \nThis graphic shows the process of water entering the watershed. When it rains\, all of the water drains to one body of water. It falls on land and travels to a stream and eventually a river that empties into a lake or ocean. Water also soaks into the ground to add to groundwater and underground rivers.  \nBy protecting our watersheds and preventing pollution\, we help secure our quality of life and reduce the costs of government cleanup programs. Also\, keeping our local waters clean helps protect the water supply and habitat for people and animals that live downstream\, allowing them to experience the same benefits. \n \nREGISTER NOW AT\nhttps://omgmeetthewatershed.eventbrite.com  \nSUGGESTED DONATION OF $10

SUMMARY:FREE TREE Giveaway on 4/1 ONLY
DESCRIPTION:Annual Tree Giveaway: April 1st only\n*Pick up at Great Seneca Park* \nDATE and LOCATION CHANGE: We are pleased to offer free native trees on April 1 for the Seneca Creek and Muddy Branch watersheds. Trees will be available at Seneca Creek State Park parking lot for the state park office on Thursday afternoon only. \nEach person/family can take up to (10) seedling trees on a first come basis. We expect to get 50 each of a variety of native species both shrubs\, small trees and large trees. Tree species and descriptions are attached – this varies slightly from the list of requested trees. \nThis year\, we will minimize contact during distribution and plan to adhere to social distancing requirements (6 feet). Please allow time to wait your turn\, and bring your own newspaper/paper bags\, buckets or plastic bags in which to carry your trees. Please note all trees will need to be planted ASAP since they are bare root\, but as they are small and are easy to plant.\n \nTrees will be available at Seneca Creek State Park parking lot for the state park office on Thursday afternoon only.\n \nDistribution time & place: Thursday 4/1 2 pm – 6:30 pm; Seneca State Park\n               \nTrees will need deer protection: stakes with wire fencing works well. This year they’ll also need netting to protect from cicadas. Easy to secure as these are such small trees but essential. Info on tree planting is found here. We are sorry but we cannot set aside trees.  \nContact Merikay Smith if you have questions (merikays@verizon.net).\nPlease do not call the State Park – they don’t know event details.

SUMMARY:Forum — Power: Limits and Prospects for Human Survival
DESCRIPTION:The Cedar Lane Ecosystems Study Group is hosting an evening forum with author and Post Carbon Institute (PCI) Senior Fellow Richard Heinberg to discuss key messages in his new book\n\n\nPOWER: LIMITS AND PROSPECTS FOR HUMAN SURVIVAL\n\nWednesday\, March 10\, 7 p.m. \n \nREGISTER NOW!\nPower: Limits and Prospects for Human Survival \nA Forum with RICHARD HEINBERG\nAuthor and Senior Fellow at the Post Carbon Institute\n \nAs Montgomery County\, MD—the main focus of this forum\, though the topic is relevant everywhere—concludes the drafting of its Climate Action Plan after nearly a year and a half of work with citizen advisors\, consultants\, and its own staff\, we are faced with the daunting goals we have set: 80% reduction in our carbon emissions by 2027\, and 100% by 2035. How will we get there? What are the limits of renewable energy? Are we addressing the root causes?\n\nClimate change is part of a larger crisis\, often labeled “overshoot\,” and solar and wind power by themselves won’t extricate us from that dilemma. The ability of renewables to fully replace fossil fuels has been oversold. If that is the case\, what are our alternatives?\n\nBeginning in 2003 with The Party’s Over: Oil\, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies\, one of the first full-length analyses of peak oil\, Richard Heinberg has written numerous books on topics examining the implications of our modern society’s dependence on fossil fuels\, and what may come next as the availability of cheap fossil fuels begins to decline. In addition to Richard’s forthcoming new book\, his 2016 book Our Renewable Future: Laying the Path for One Hundred Percent Clean Energy will be pertinent to the evening’s discussion.\n\nPlease ☛register here to join us☚ for this evening of provocative analysis and discussion\, March 10\, at 7 pm. And please consider a donation to PCI for this event when you register\, for all of the hard and important work that they do!

SUMMARY:Exploring Farming and Solar Synergies in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Farming and Solar Synergies in Maryland\nThursday\, February 25\, 11 a.m.\n\n\nSolar United Neighbors\, Dr. Arjun Makhijani from the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research\, and Lexie Hain of the American Solar Grazing Association\n\nCome and learn about a new report released by Dr. Arjun Makhijani of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER). This new report explores the synergies between farming and solar with the premises that agricultural production on farmland should be maintained and farm profitability and soil health should be increased. Instead of focusing on solar siting\, this report explores whether a strong case can be made from a public policy point of view for developing solar so that it helps to preserve and improve farmland and the ecosystem in which it is located\, while enabling achievement of both energy system and food system goals. \nWebinar hosts:\nIEER\n(www.ieer.org)\nAmerican Solar Grazing Association\n(www.solargrazing.org)\nSolar United Neighbors\n(www.solarunitedneighbors.org)\n\n\nRSVP: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XQo9bzfOTsenyo4nOsKhgw

SUMMARY:Fossil Fuel Divestment Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Fossil Fuel Divestment Town Hall \nWednesday\, February 24\, 7 p.m.   \nTown Hall sponsored by 350.org  examines the Count’s policy on fossil fuel divestment for the County pensions\, stating that it is a “moral necessity to use the County’s financial power to fight the climate emergency and support a rapid and just transition from fossil fuels”.  The County’s Board of Investment Trustees (BIT) holds our County’s pension funds\, over $50 million dollars\, in companies like ExxonMobil and Arch Coal.  This Town Hall will examine the significant recent developments in the world of fossil fuel divestment\, as well as demonstrate the financial imperative to divest from the County’s fossil fuel holdings.  A financial expert\,  former New York State Comptroller\, Tom Sanzillo\, will share his experience with New York’s divestment.  \nClick here to register .  \nContact Jeff Weisner\,350.org\, for more information.
