SUMMARY:Sierra Club Natural Places Monthly Meeting CAMPAIGN for NATURE 30x30 panel
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Club Natural Places Monthly Meeting CAMPAIGN for NATURE 30×30 panel\nSat\, Oct 17\, 2020 • 2:00 PM  – 3:30 PM  \nDuring this time of crises we have discovered how important our natural places are.   Therefore\, on October 17th\, 2-4pm\, Natural Places Committee will discuss the international advocacy Campaign for Nature with the goal of conserving at least 30% of land and water by 2030—which is why it is also called the 30 X 30 Campaign! \nThe 30 x 30 campaign is a visionary initiative to try to preserve 30 percent of America’s lands and coastal waters by the year 2030 — an intermediate goal toward eventually protecting 50 percent of the earth’s surface for Nature.  It is considered by many biologists as necessary to counter an increasing crisis of species and biodiversity loss — and also the climate crisis. \nOur first speaker is Chris Yoder\, long time Sierra Club activist and expert on Natural Lands. Our second speaker is Luke Chesek\, who serves on the City Council of Mount Rainier\, MD\, where he is writing an ordinance to create a native plant network throughout the city\, one piece of his strategic vision to build a more sustainable city. He will discuss native plant corridors and greenways\, one of the pieces of the Campaign.   \nYou will leave this presentation with tools to help preserve public lands. We need your voice to shape policy here in Maryland and to participate in the national decisions about our protected lands! \nFOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER

SUMMARY:Solar United Neighbors 2020 National Solar Congress
DESCRIPTION:Maryland’s Solar Congress is a time each year for SUN supporters from all over the state to come together\, meet like-minded people\, and attend a full day of solar education sessions. These sessions include everything from panel discussions to skills trainings to help build our capacity to work together to move toward a more equitable clean energy economy. \nThis year\, due to COVID-19\, we will have the same opportunity — online! Instead of one day\, we will be holding an entire month of events as a part of the National Solar Congress to connect people across Maryland and the country!  Sessions will cover topics from “solar 101 basics” to “what to do now that you have solar” and “how to advocate for solar policies.” \n\n\n\nRSVP for the National Solar Congress!\n\n\n\nWe are excited to be holding a Maryland focused session:\n \nCommunity Solar 101 \nTuesday\, October 20th | 7:00 – 8:00 PM ET\nCommunity solar offers the benefit of solar to those who can’t — or prefer not to — install solar panels on their homes. In this session\, you’ll learn the basics of community solar and how subscribing to a community solar project enables individuals and businesses to receive a credit on their electric bill each month for the solar energy produced by their share. \nBe sure to check out the full calendar of Solar Congress sessions! SUMMARY:Audubon Naturalist Society – Washington's 2011 Earthquake: How Could It Happen Here?
DESCRIPTION:Fall Birding at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens\, DC  \nSunday\, September 27\n8:00 – 10:30 am\nLeader: Paul Pisano \nOur fall birding series visits natural areas under an hour’s drive from D.C. where a variety of habitats — including field\, forest\, and wetland—provide good opportunities for the observation and ID of birds in autumn. On the earliest walks\, we’ll hope to catch some southbound migrants. As the season progresses\, we’ll watch for sparrows\, raptors\, waterfowl\, and other birds\, both resident and overwintering in the region. These teaching walks are aimed at beginning to mid-level birders\, but all are welcome. Our explorations will be on mostly level\, natural surface trails that may be uneven\, muddy\, and/or somewhat slippery. \nRegister Online
