SUMMARY:Books and Bulbs Swap for LED Bulbs @ Twinbrook Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Books and Bulbs at your local library\n\nTwinbrook Library: Tuesday\, October 2 from 5pm – 7pm\n\nOctober is National Energy Action Month and we’re celebrating by hosting 6 Books and Bulbs events at libraries across the County. \nBooks and Bulbs is a free event where County residents bring their old lightbulbs and swap them for up to 3 LEDs and a reusable bag. \nCollect your old incandescent or CFL light bulbs and bring them to a Books and Bulbs event near you\, and DEP will exchange them for up to 3 new and energy efficient LEDs. The ENERGY STAR®-certified LEDs we’re giving away offer a warm white light that’s equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent bulb.  \nNot only will you save money by getting free LEDs\, but also you’ll pocket money from lower electric bills. You could cut your utility bill by at least $25 per year by replacing five traditional\, incandescent bulbs with LEDs. \nOther Upcoming Books and Bulbs Events\n\nConnie Morella Library in Bethesda: Wednesday\, October 10 from 3pm – 5pm\nDamascus Library: Saturday\, October 13 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm\nMaggie Nightingale Library in Poolesville: Monday\, October 15 from 4pm – 6pm\nMarilyn J. Praisner Library in Burtonsville: Thursday\, October 18 from 5pm – 7pm\nWhite Oak Library: Saturday\, October 27 from 12pm – 2pm\n\nThe giveaway is a partnership between Department of Environmental Protection and the Montgomery County Public Libraries. \n\n\nLED prices have declined 85 percent in recent years\, and bulbs can be bought for as little as $2 to $5.

SUMMARY:Montgomery County Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Montgomery County Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (MC-FACS) monthly meeting is Sept 17 from 730 to 9pm at River Road UUC\, 6301 River Road Bethesda 20817.  We are going to be discussing getting out the vote for climate friendly candidates for the Nov 6 election\, and having our congregations pledge to reduce green house gases 80% in line with the MC resolution. \n  \nPLEASE JOIN US TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY \nWe started MC-FACS in Sept 2017 to bring together congregations in Montgomery County that are interested in fighting global warming at a local level.  Our aim is to be a moral voice urging the Montgomery County Council and Executive to pass laws limiting carbon emissions from Montgomery County. We are working with Interfaith Power and Light\, Sierra Club\, and 350.org. \nHistory.  In 2017\, Sierra Club MC\, and 350moco.org lobbied the MC Council to pass the International Green Construction Code\, to reduce carbon emissions from commercial buildings by 10%.  River Road UUC\, Cedar Lane UUC\, and Beth Chai all helped in this effort\, but we were not able to make contact with other green churches in MC.  IPL does not work on County legislation\, and other MC faith organizations do not address climate issues.  The construction industry was well organized\, with 10-20 developers working together against the legislation\, and it finally passed in sept 2017 in a weakened version. \nFairfax County VA has the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) which is a coalition of over 50 faith groups lobbying county government on climate issues.  We will use them as a model\, and try to bring churches to support climate legislation in MC.  Since Maryland gives counties control over building codes and much transportation\, we don’t have to wait for state or national changes before we move against carbon pollution here. \nAs of Sept 2018 members from over 30 congregations have attended our monthly meetings \nCurrent issues with which we are involved include \n\nClosing the Dickerson Incinerator\nDivesting fossil fuel stocks from the County pension funds\nAsking for a County Climate Office to oversee carbon emissions\nLobbying for the Maryland Forest Conservation Act\nResearching clean electricity options\nGetting out the vote for environmental candidates\n\nFor more info email me: walter.weiss@verizon.net \nWalter Weiss \nCo-Chair Environmental Task Force \nRiver Road UUC \nwalter.weiss@verizon.net

These individuals are working to rebuild what’s broken\, rethink what’s possible\, and revitalize communities. Their stories are proof that America does not need to choose between keeping our lights on and protecting our communities. Critically\, Reinventing Power underscores that we don’t have to sacrifice jobs for a clean environment. Supporting a clean energy future means building a better\, more prosperous future for everyone. Over the film’s 50 minutes\, you’ll meet people in eight states whose lives were changed by the renewable energy industry while exploring various aspects of the clean energy industry from innovation to installation. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Dr. Alfred Bartlett.  A retired pediatrician and public health physician\, Dr. Bartlett has become actively engaged in fighting climate change\, focusing on the development of clean renewable energy (offshore wind and solar).  He is a member of the Board of Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility\, the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter\, the Steering Committee of the Chapter’s Energy Committee\, and the Public Service Commission’s working group on Community Solar.  He is also co-lead of the Maryland Sierra Club’s campaign for 100% clean renewable energy by 2035. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo find out more: https://act.sierraclub.org/events/details?id=7010Z000002B3uvQAC&formcampaignid=7010Z000002B1LLQA0&data=6b250f691aa47b62e1c422d5b4453f70a4df1f48e0ed3295224de6aff7fb1cb7fec74ad2a33c53223355e5f515b84ccd
