SUMMARY:Takoma Horticultural Club: Mosquitoes and Ticks...Oh Ick!
DESCRIPTION:The Takoma Horticultural Club invites you to our next meeting: \nMosquitoes and Ticks…Oh Ick!\nSpeakers: Christopher Lewis and Amy Milne \nWednesday\, July 18\, 7:30 – 9 p.m.\nHistoric Takoma Inc.\, 7328 Carrol Ave. \nCome hear advice from two experts on dealing with ticks and mosquitoes. \nChristopher Lewis’ talk will cover the tick life cycle: where they live\, what they do\, the bad news about diseases they carry\, and what we can do to protect ourselves from ticks and tick bites. \nChristopher grew up in western Howard County\, Maryland\, and has been a resident of Silver Spring for over twenty years\, mostly working as a horticulturist/sales associate with The Behnke Nurseries Company\, in the woody plants department. He is a Montgomery County Master Gardener and a Maryland certified professional horticulturist. He is also a beekeeper\, and many of us have heard the gardening talks he gives regularly at Behnkes and at local garden clubs through the year. \nAmy Milne’s talk is titled “Garden Guardian: Mosquitoes in Your Yard and Eco-Friendly Control Methods” Topics include: mosquitoes in our region\, their life cycle\, places in your yard that could serve as habitat\, and how to identify a mosquito during its different life stages. She will also discuss benefits and dangers of mosquitoes in your garden\, non-toxic methods of reducing exposure\, and examples of community-wide use of mosquito traps. \nAmy moved to Takoma Park from northern Maryland in 2012 and attended the University of Maryland from 2014 – 2017\, graduating in December with a BS in Environmental Science and Technology. During the last two years of college\, she worked in a mosquito ecology lab which sparked an interest in infectious diseases and public health. After a gap year\, she will work toward an advanced degree in Tropical Medicine and Community Health. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nWear a recycled or home-made nametag. \nBRING a snack to share.  \nYou are welcome to join the club or renew your membership by bringing a $12 check.
