I am hopeful that your “Green Team”  will have at least 2-3 persons!  \nI think any congregation will really flourish after they work on an action plan.  \n\n\n\nIn training your Green Team will identify “their environmental story” as it relates to them and the congregation.\n\n\nAction plan projects range from something small like a recycling effort or rain barrel installation to something larger like getting help with installing permeable sidewalks/driveways\, a rain garden and/or landscaping to control run-off.\n\n\nThe Green Team can even save on energy by investigating solar panel usage with our partner organization Interfaith Power & Light.\nIt all starts with your Green Teams one-day training which will provide them with a Faithful Green Leaders Handbook to help guide them through the process as their action plan develops. \n\n\nClick here to download the flyer to share with others in your congregation.  \n\n\nClick here to learn more about the training if you or any congregation members are interested. \n\n\n\nThanks and continue to bless and protect the earth!  Please feel free to pass along this information to anyone else that might be interested! \n\n**All attendees must come with at least 2 other people from their congregation\, because there is no such thing as “a team of 1.”\nIf you need help building your green team\, go here to find some helpful resources. \nSee flyer here for more information.  Questions? SUMMARY:NCSL Webinar – Building the 21st Century Energy Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Fall 2020 Energy\, Environment and Transportation Webinar Series  \nNCSL is pleased to present you with the Fall 2020 Energy\, Environment and Transportation Webinar Series in lieu of the 2020 Legislative Summit in Indianapolis. NCSL will be hosting five webinars beginning Aug. 27 and concluding Oct. 22. All webinars will begin at 3 p.m. ET/ 2 p.m. CT/ 1 p.m. MT/ Noon PT.  \nThursday\, Sept. 10 |  Building the 21st Century Energy Workforce—Register now \nWorkforce development is one of the most important issues facing the U.S. energy industry that employs 6.7 million Americans. Clean energy jobs are growing as new technologies come online\, while some traditional resources—such as coal-fired power plants—are shutting down\, leaving a growing number of Americans out of work. Large-scale retirements among an aging workforce also present new challenges for hiring qualified workers across the energy sector. These issues—now compounded with economy-wide job losses driven by COVID-19—are presenting new obstacles as states look to bolster their energy workforce. This session will explore the workforce challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector\, highlight how the coronavirus pandemic is shifting the energy jobs landscape and how policymakers can support and train skilled workers to fill these vital positions. \nUPCOMING WEBINARS \nThursday\, Sept. 24 |  Green Means Go? What’s Next for a New Federal Transportation Infrastructure Package—Register now \nThursday\, Oct. 8 |  Exploring Climate Action Options for Sustainable and Resilient Agriculture—Register now \nThursday\, Oct. 22 |  Is the Clock Running Out for Standard Time? —Register now\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Solar United Neighbors: Myth of the "Cost Shift"
DESCRIPTION:Myth of the “Cost Shift”\nGoing solar allows you to save money and take control of where your electricity comes from. More than that\, it benefits everyone\, even those who don’t have solar. \nDespite these truths\, monopoly utilities and their allies are waging  a  smear campaign against solar. They’ve spent millions of dollars trying to convince the public that rooftop solar increases costs for non-solar users. \nYou may have heard this called the “cost-shift”. \nThis false argument from utilities colors how policy makers view solar and impacts your ability to benefit from solar energy. \nJoin us next Tuesday\, September 9. \nLearn from two national experts how you can fight back against the cost-shift myth. \n\n\n\nClick here to RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat: Webinar to discuss anti-solar myth of cost-shifting\nWho: Nicole Sitaraman\, Senior Manager of Public Policy\, Sunrun; Karl Rábago\, Former Texas Public Utilities Commission member\nWhen: September 9\, 2 p.m. ET \nNicole Sitaraman currently serves as a Senior Manager of Public Policy at Sunrun\, Inc. In her role at Sunrun\, Nicole spearheads Sunrun’s engagement in legislative and regulatory policy initiatives in the Mid-Atlantic region. This includes\, advocating for policies that enable increased equitable access to distributed solar and battery storage to facilitate a more decentralized energy grid. \nKarl Rábago has 30 years of experience working with the regulatory\, technology\, and business issues regarding solar energy and utility regulation. This includes service as a public utility commissioner in Texas; a Deputy Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy; an advocate with Rocky Mountain Institute\, Environmental Defense Fund\, the Houston Advanced Research Center\, the Pace Energy and Climate Center; a utility executive and regulatory affairs manager; and consulting and expert witness work in more than 100 cases and proceedings. \nAfter brief presentations\, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions. SUMMARY:Sierra Club MD Natural Places Committee Stream and Water Issues Work Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Natural Places Committee Stream and Water Issues Work Meeting\nDate and Time:\nWed\, Sep 2\, 2020  •   5:00 PM  – 6:30 PM  (Local Time) \nAdd to Calendar\nOrganized By: Maryland Chapter Natural Places Committee \nEvent Organizers:\nLily Fountain\n   lily.fountain@mdsierra.org\n   (301) 474-2762\nKenneth Bawer\n   kbawer@msn.com\n   (240) 744-6366\nMarc Imlay\n   ialm@erols.com \nTO REGISTER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nWhetstone Run\, before stream restoration   \nNatural Places Committee is sponsoring this Stream and Water Issues Work Meeting for members interested in changing the regulations about how our stream issues are managed\, focusing on managing stormwater by more sustainable\, effective means such as tree preservation and planting\, replacing concrete and asphalt with water-absorbing alternatives\, and using tree trunks and other alternatives for less disturbance to natural places. At the meeting\,  participants will discuss developing a template letter to educate local officials when areas  are threatened by inappropriate management and trying to address issues before the bulldozers are stream side. \n\nBulldozer engineering stream bed with negative impact on habitat.  \nAt the August Natural Places Committee meeting environmental scientist and ecological restoration specialist Rod Simmons gave a powerpoint presentation and described problems with some of the standard techniques used for dealing with stormwater and pollution issues in Maryland. Heavy equipment is often brought into delicate habitats\, and mature canopy trees and forest stands are destroyed. For example\, instead of clear-cutting an area\, proven best practices such as the selective armoring or stream banks with boulders and wood and creating log jams and wood snags that mimic natural processes are recommended. However\, frequently concrete culverts or non-native boulder rock types replace riparian meadows\, native plants are destroyed\, and soil erosion and invasive species that don’t host wildlife take over.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:350MoCo Book Discussion: A Voyage Across an Ancient Ocean
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Thursday\, August 13th\nTIME: 7:30 – 8:30 pm \nJoin 350MoCo‘s very own David Goodrich for a discussion about his newest book: \nA Voyage Across an Ancient Ocean: A Bicycle Journey Through the Northern Dominion of Oil.\n\nAbout the book and Dave: \nIn the face of widespread misinformation and misunderstanding\, a climate scientist ventures into the vast heart of America’s new oil country on just two wheels. After his epic bicycle journey that took him from the Delaware shore to the Oregon coast\, distinguished climate scientist David Goodrich sets out on his bike again to traverse the Western Interior Seaway—an ancient ocean that once spread across half of North America. When the waters cleared a geologic age ago\, what was left behind was vast\, flat prairie\, otherworldly rock formations\, and oil shale deposits. \nAs Goodrich journeys through the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park and across the prairies of the upper Midwest and Canada\, we get a raw and ground-level view of where the tar sands and oil reserves are being opened up at an incredible and unprecedented pace. Extraordinary and unregulated\, this “black goldrush” is boom and bust in every sense. In a manner reminiscent of John McPhee and Rachel Carson\, combined with Goodrich’s wry self-deprecation and scientific expertise\, A Voyage Across an Ancient Ocean is a galvanizing and adventure-filled read that gets to the heart of drilling on our continent.\n\n\nDavid Goodrich worked as the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Observations and Monitoring Program\, and served as the Director of the UN Global Climate Observing System in Geneva\, Switzerland.  In retirement\, Dave is now Board Chair at The Chesapeake Climate Action Network\, Steering Committee Member at 350 Montgomery County\, and Coach of Rockville High School’s ‘It’s Academic’ team. In addition to his cross-country bicycle trip\, he has ridden down the Appalachians and across Montana\, South Dakota\, France and Spain.\n\n\n350 MoCo’s own Rick Sullivan\, who’s ridden with David for thousands of miles\, will be hosting the discussion\, so there’s real potential for embarrassing stories. Music will be provided by the Sunshiners: Rick\, Kipyn Martin and Jeff Weisner. \n\nThe book is available from your local bookstore on August 4th. It’s also available on bookshop.org if you’d like to support your local bookstore through an online order.\nRegister here now.
