SUMMARY:350MoCo Book Discussion: A Voyage Across an Ancient Ocean
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Thursday\, August 13th\nTIME: 7:30 – 8:30 pm \nJoin 350MoCo‘s very own David Goodrich for a discussion about his newest book: \nA Voyage Across an Ancient Ocean: A Bicycle Journey Through the Northern Dominion of Oil.\n\nAbout the book and Dave: \nIn the face of widespread misinformation and misunderstanding\, a climate scientist ventures into the vast heart of America’s new oil country on just two wheels. After his epic bicycle journey that took him from the Delaware shore to the Oregon coast\, distinguished climate scientist David Goodrich sets out on his bike again to traverse the Western Interior Seaway—an ancient ocean that once spread across half of North America. When the waters cleared a geologic age ago\, what was left behind was vast\, flat prairie\, otherworldly rock formations\, and oil shale deposits. \nAs Goodrich journeys through the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park and across the prairies of the upper Midwest and Canada\, we get a raw and ground-level view of where the tar sands and oil reserves are being opened up at an incredible and unprecedented pace. Extraordinary and unregulated\, this “black goldrush” is boom and bust in every sense. In a manner reminiscent of John McPhee and Rachel Carson\, combined with Goodrich’s wry self-deprecation and scientific expertise\, A Voyage Across an Ancient Ocean is a galvanizing and adventure-filled read that gets to the heart of drilling on our continent.\n\n\nDavid Goodrich worked as the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Observations and Monitoring Program\, and served as the Director of the UN Global Climate Observing System in Geneva\, Switzerland.  In retirement\, Dave is now Board Chair at The Chesapeake Climate Action Network\, Steering Committee Member at 350 Montgomery County\, and Coach of Rockville High School’s ‘It’s Academic’ team. In addition to his cross-country bicycle trip\, he has ridden down the Appalachians and across Montana\, South Dakota\, France and Spain.\n\n\n350 MoCo’s own Rick Sullivan\, who’s ridden with David for thousands of miles\, will be hosting the discussion\, so there’s real potential for embarrassing stories. Music will be provided by the Sunshiners: Rick\, Kipyn Martin and Jeff Weisner. \n\nThe book is available from your local bookstore on August 4th. It’s also available on bookshop.org if you’d like to support your local bookstore through an online order.\nRegister here now.

DESCRIPTION:4th Annual Wheaton Arts Parade\nand WAP/OMG #6 Remix Tetrahedron! You can help! \nJoin us for #6 (Plastics) Remix Zoom Workshop with OMG & WAP \n \nThursday\, August 6  •   5:30 – 6:30 pm \n This workshop will give you ideas of how you can transform your #6 plastics into native plants\, flowers and leaves to decorate our tetrahedron. Please have any #6 items ready and with you for the class. \nRegister in advance for workshop: https://bit.ly/3gqFSDg \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nMark your calendars for future #6 Remix Thursday Workshops on August 20 and September 17 \n  \nMORE ON THE WHEATON ARTS PARADE AND HOW YOU CAN HELP \nWheaton Arts Parade (WAP) and One Montgomery Green (OMG) will work together on a “#6 Remix” Tetrahedron— a re-use/ up-cycle project to help the community become more aware of what is NOT recyclable in MoCo and ways we can re-use these items as art versus having them end up polluting our planet.  \nWAP plans to install 39 panels of artwork by local artists and students. 30 triangular panels with 4 ft. edges and 9 triangles with 8 ft. edges will be assembled into 13 large tetrahedrons and installed around the Wheaton Urban District\, from the Westfield Wheaton Mall to the new town plaza to the Library and Recreation Center. \nWAP/OMG will make one of these tetrahedrons that will be placed around Wheaton\, MD this fall. Our theme will be NATIVE PLANTS & FLOWERS. \nSave Your #6 Plastics to turn into art!\nPlease save your *CLEAN* #6 polystyrene materials that Montgomery County does not recycle (see examples on left) and many people tend to “wish-recycle” assuming or wishing that they can be recycled. A drive-up & drop-off location and dates to do so will be announced very soon.
