SUMMARY:Rain Garden Plants That Attract Pollinators and Birds
DESCRIPTION:When we get a lot of rain\, are there areas in your yard that stay soggy?  Or maybe you’re trying to accumulate and infilrate runoff in a raingarden? What plants work best?  Come on May 2 and find out from an expert! \nNEIGHBORS OF THE NORTHWEST BRANCH PRESENTS \nWHAT: Rain Garden Plants That Attract Pollinators and Birds \nWHEN: Wednesday\, May 2\, 7:30 – 9:15 p.m. \nWHO: Christopher Lewis\, Certified Professional Horticulturist \nWHERE: White Oak Library\, 11701 New Hampshire Avenue\, Silver Spring \nMore info:  A wet site could just be low or perhaps at the bottom of a swale that drains water from other properties. The soil may be compacted following construction. Or the land may be wet with a high water table.  If your property stays wet 24 hours after heavy rains\, or if water stays 24 hours in a 2-foot hole\, then wet soil plants are for you.  Plant roots need oxygen to grow. Roots immersed in too much water will rot\, causing plants to die.  Chris will show us plants that are native yet deer resistant\, that attract pollinators and birds\, and that have adapted to such moist conditions. \nChristopher Lewis grew up on a farm in Howard County. His geology studies at Susquehanna University in PA led to work in the oil fields of Louisiana\, then as a supervisor of construction at BWI Airport. But eventually Chris decided to pursue his life-long love of growing plants.  He studied horticulture at the USDA Graduate School and entered the Montgomery County Master Gardener program.  From 2005 to the present he has worked at Behnkes\, where he manages the garden shop.  At home\, Chris tends his garden and his bee hives\, pursuing his passion for edibles and native plants.  Much more satisfying than searching for oil!  Chris is a Certified Professional Horticulturist\, is also certified in Integrated Pest Management\, and completed Montgomery County’s Beekeeper training. \nPlease join us on May 2 to discover what a wide variety of plants will fill the wet spot need!  Light refreshments.  And note that we will finally be back in our traditional meeting place\, the White Oak Library!  It will be good to be home! \nhttps://neighborsnwb.org/events-1 \n

SUMMARY:Inspiration Works - Bat Talk!
DESCRIPTION:Inspiration Works – Bat Talk!\n\nTuesday\, April 10\, 2018  •  7:00 PM  9:00 PM\n\n\nSilver Spring Civic Center\n1 Veterans Place\nSilver Spring\, MD\, 20910United States\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHave you spent time enjoying Sligo Creek (other than driving along Sligo Creek Parkway)? Are you interested in bats? Come learn more about both at the annual Friends of Sligo Creek Inspiration Works meeting in the Silver Spring Civic Building\, 1 Veterans Place\, Silver Spring\, MD 20910\, on Tuesday\, April 10 from 7-9pm! Nina Fascione\, former director of Bat Conservation International\, is speaking at the meeting at 7:30. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBats nationally are disappearing from our natural world because of human encroachment\, loss of habitat and disease. A leader in wildlife conservation efforts\, Nina will speak about the plight of bats\, their value in our environment\, and what we might be able to do to help bats recover. \nBefore and after Nina’s talk\, enjoy some free pizza and learn more about the activities going on to preserve the natural beauty of Sligo Creek. There are many ways to get involved\, such as posting sightings of wildlife on the Natural History webpage\, removing trash\, testing and recording water quality at monitoring sites along the creek\, or encouraging the use of rainbarrels and native plants on homeowner’s properties to slow down stormwater from scouring away the streambanks. Visit the Friends of Sligo Creek website at fosc.org to learn more. \n\n\n\n\nLEARN MORE\n\n\n\n\nFriends of Sligo Creek is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to protecting\, improving\, and appreciating the ecological health of Sligo Creek Park and its surrounding watershed.
