SUMMARY:Underground RR hike\, Sandy Spring Slave Museum\, steel band concert
DESCRIPTION:Underground RR hike\, Sandy Spring Slave Museum\, steel band concert \n\n\n\n\nPlease join us this Saturday for fun and exploration practically in our backyard!  The Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River has a rich human history\, and the African-American legacy is particularly poignant. Between the African-American museums upstream in historic Sandy Spring and downstream in North Brentwood\, and the home of Frederick Douglass overlooking the river’s mainstem\, there’s much to learn and see within just miles of your neighborhood. \nWHEN:  Saturday\, March 17\, noon \nWHERE:  Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park\, Norwood and Ednor Roads. \nFrom Woodlawn we’ll hike along the Underground Railroad Trail – an easy loop trail that is under an hour.  We’ll view the actual Sandy Spring\, one of the NWB’s points of origin\, and check out conservation landscaping near the Friends Meeting House. For lunch\, you can bring your own or eat at nearby Urban Barbeque or Passion Bakery Café before we drive up the road to the Sandy Spring Slave Museum and African Art Gallery\, tour this unique local facility\, and end the afternoon with a lively Steel Drum performance. \nLater in the summer\, date yet to be determined\, we’ll organize a trip to the Prince Georges African-American Museum and Cultural Center in North Brentwood\, within walking distance of the confluence of the Northwest and Northeast Branches. \nAnd\, for those who’d like the complete experience\, 2018 is both the “Year of the Anacostia” and the bicentennial anniversary of Frederick Douglass’s birth. So there’s no better time to drive further downstream and visit the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site at his home\, Cedar Hill\, overlooking the Anacostia River.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Increasing Connection Between Energy Efficiency and Real Estate
DESCRIPTION:Webinar: The Increasing Connection Between Energy Efficiency and Real Estate \nThu\, Mar 15\, 2018 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \nHow is residential energy efficiency increasingly connected to real estate transactions? Some five million such transactions take place every year in the United States. One example includes a new law that went into effect January 1\, 2018 in Portland\, OR. The new law requires a U.S. Department of Energy Home Energy Score be included in all residential real estate transactions to rate a home’s  energy efficiency. \nOn this Better Buildings Residential Network Peer Exchange Call\, our speakers will share updates concerning how energy efficiency is increasingly a part of home appraisals and sales. We’ll discuss efforts to connect home performance data to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) as well as how energy efficiency programs are engaging the real estate community. Come prepared to share your experiences and questions concerning the real estate sector.  \nhttps://register.gotowebinar.com/register/6686678152503693571 \n

SUMMARY:Wheaton Revitalization Project progress report at WUDAC
DESCRIPTION:Residents can get detailed report on Wheaton Revitalization Project progress at Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, March 13 \nWHEATON RESCUE SQUAD\, GREEN ROOM\, 2400 ARCOLA AVENUE\, WHEATON\, MD \nMeeting at Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad will include progress update on construction so far and updated milestone dates as project heads toward completion in 2020 \nThe Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) and project developer Stonebridge Carras will provide a detailed update on the progress of the Wheaton Revitalization Project to the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, March 13\, at the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad. Residents are invited to attend to learn what has been accomplished thus far in the project and what are the upcoming—and the long-term—steps toward completion.  \nThe Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad is located at 2400 Arcola Ave. in Wheaton. The meeting will be held in the “Green Room” on the second floor adjacent to the interim Wheaton Library. \nMajor steps in the revitalization of Downtown Wheaton are evolving around the Wheaton Triangle Business District as the three-year project continues to be on schedule for completion in 2020—and continues to be on budget. \nOver the next 2 ½ years\, the Wheaton Revitalization Project will be transforming Wheaton’s central business district with a mixed-use\, transit-oriented development. In addition to the construction of a 14-story government office building\, the project will provide 397 below ground parking spaces\, first floor retail space and a new town square. Most significantly impacted during construction is the Wheaton Triangle area between Veirs Mill Road and Georgia Avenue. The local roads that form the Triangle area include Grandview Avenue\, Reedie Drive and Triangle Lane. \nThe main occupant of the building will be the relocated Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission\, which is now in Downtown Silver Spring. The new 308\,000 square-foot\, LEED platinum certified Wheaton office building\, which will include retail operations on its ground floor\, will also be home to several County departments including Permitting Services\, Environmental Protection\, Health and Human Services\, Recreation and Community Use of Public Facilities. Also relocating to the new building are the Wheaton Urban District and the Mid-County Regional Services Center. \nConstruction got underway in June 2017. With each significant step\, some aspects of the area are occasionally impacted. The schedule for significant project milestones includes: \n\nDemolition of former Mid-County Regional Services Center (March-April 2018)\nFoundation construction completion (Summer 2018)\nTown Square completion (Summer 2019)\nBuilding top-out (August 2019)\nBuilding close-in (October 2019)\nInterior build-out (Spring 2020)\nSubstantial completion (May 2020)\nMove-in: occupancy (Summer 2020)\n\nThe new town square of approximately 20\,000 square feet will be built on the site of the former Mid-County Regional Services Center Building on the Reedie Drive side of the project. The town square will provide space for public use and entertainment purposes. It will include an amphitheater and covered stage. \nA camera has been installed to view construction on the site and can be accessed via the project’s web site at: wheatonproject.com .   (You can get updates and information at this site as well.) \nThe Wheaton Revitalization Project will create a walkable\, pedestrian friendly community with access to public open space. The project aims to increase use of the Wheaton Metro Station\, reduce traffic congestion\, increase employment opportunities and services in the area as well as introduce outdoor entertainment opportunities on the new town square.

SUMMARY:Conservation Montgomery: Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Montgomery presents\nClimate Change \nIts impacts\, and our growing efforts to contain it \nHefner Hall at Asbury Methodist Village\, 301 Odendhal Avenue\, Gaithersburg\, MD 20877 \nWednesday\, March 7\, 2018 •  7:30 – 9 pm \nPlease join Conservation Montgomery member Phil Jakobsberg for a presentation on the effects of climate change\, how our energy sources are changing in response to it\, and how through carbon pricing we can move more quickly to non-fossil fuel alternatives.  \nPhil recently attended a training for the Leadership Corps of the Climate Reality Project. He will share what he learned about the effects of climate change – the impacts of which are larger and wider in scope than many of us know – and the solutions that are moving us away from carbon emitting energy. \nPhil will also discuss the details behind a carbon pricing bill that was just introduced into the Maryland Assembly\, and how that bill fits into Maryland’s overall efforts to reach the mandate of 40% emissions reductions from 2006 levels by 2030. \nOur partners with the Asbury Methodist Village community are the hosts for this event. We are very excited about working with an ace team of conservationist at Asbury this year! \nDirections: \nCome to Asbury through the 301 Odendhal Avenue gate. Tell them you are coming for the climate change solutions talk. Once through the gate\, turn right at the first stop sign and then right again at the second right turn entryway. You are directly in front of the entry to Hefner Hall (large room in front of you once in the door). Enter Hefner lecture hall by going either right or left around the blue wall with stars (and maybe other decorations). Just remember\, please do not park in resident parking. There are many additional places in the same parking lots. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI’ll be there! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI can’t make it \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nhttp://myemail.constantcontact.com/Two-upcoming-events—Climate-talk-and-a-Green-Forum.html?soid=1103548877276&aid=ymParjs0mFk

SUMMARY:Restoring & Renewing Our Urban Landscapes Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Restoring & Renewing Our Urban Landscapes Symposium\nSilver Spring Civic Building\n1 Veterans Place\, Silver Spring\, MD\nFriday\, February 23\, 2018\n8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\nHow can we design our landscapes in ways that prevent harm to existing ecosystems AND regenerate the environment? We live in an age when the most effective progress on protecting the environment will likely occur at the local level. Join a broad spectrum of actors from home gardeners to professionals in the horticulture and landscape architecture industries to learn how we can be proactive stewards of our own piece of the pie. \nThis symposium helps shift the focus beyond sustainability strategies geared towards slowing environmental degradation by emphasizing solutions that heal our damaged urban landscapes. Learn from experts about regenerative landscape design and gardening practices that help restore our ecosystems on both small and large scales. Presentations will also explore how we adapt strategies for climate resiliency aimed at preparing our landscapes to absorb stresses and maintain functionality in the face of future climate change impacts. \nAbout Green Matters                                                                                                                                       \nAbout  Green Matters\, an annual symposium sponsored by Brookside Gardens since 2004\, concentrates attention on the intersection of horticulture and environmental issues. Environmental stewardship is a core value of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC)\, Brookside Gardens’ parent organization. As such\, we strive to provide timely information and viable solutions to environmental challenges\, because we feel strongly that green does matter. \nRegistration Information \nEarly Bird Fee: $85 p/person until January 12\, 2018 \nStandard Fee:   $99 p/person after January 13\, 2018 \nRegister at ActiveMONTGOMERY.org (Course #40522) or call 301-962-1451. \n*Registration includes light breakfast\, coffee/tea\, and box lunch \n  \nFor more information\, visit https://www.montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/brookside-gardens/green-matters-symposium/
