SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Using Free and Low Cost Mapping Tools during Disasters
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR: Using Free and Low Cost Mapping Tools during Disasters \nWHEN: Thursday\, October 12\, 2017 at 1:30pm ET \nWHO CAN PARTICIPATE:  This webinar is free and open to all. Please invite others in your organizations\, send to your email lists\, and post to your social media accounts. No registration is required. \nTOPIC: National Library of Medicine Community Health Maps: Using Mapping Tools during Disasters \nThe Center for Public Service Communications and its partner Bird’s Eye View\, together with the National Library of Medicine (NLM)\, have developed the Community Health Maps (CHM) initiative (https://communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov/). CHM’s premise is that community-based organizations\, environmental health groups\, public health agencies\, and emergency management departments are in a better position to serve their populations when they are able to collect and maintain their own data\, rather than relying solely on national or state agencies\, or majority-institution partners to provide data to them. CHM has dedicated a number of resources to train students\, teachers\, community members\, and researchers. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of the tools on the CHM blog\, and give an idea on how attendees can begin utilizing these tools during disaster response. \nLearn more about the initiative before the meeting: https://communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov/2014/05 \nRECENT EXAMPLE: \nA consortium of public health advocates\, volunteers and researchers from Florida International University recently developed a “community health map” that creates a picture of the area’s health risks as they relate to king tides and the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. \nhttp://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article174515151.html#storylink=cpy \nSPEAKERS: \nJohn Scott is the President of Center for Public Service Communications. John provides guidance and expertise to individuals\, communities and public sector organizations in the area of telecommunications and information technologies to improve the collection and sharing of scientific\, technical\, and community knowledge. \nKurt Menke is a Certified GIS Professional (GISP) who has been working with public health applications of GIS for the last 15 years. Kurt is an avid open source GIS proponent\, recently authoring Mastering QGIS for Packt Publishing and Discover QGIS through Locate Press. He is an experienced FOSS4G educator and is a co-author of the GeoAcademy. In 2015 he was awarded the Global Educator of the Year Team Award by GeoForAll as part of the GeoAcademy team. \nLOGIN: \nMeeting URL (Open in Internet Explorer browser): \nhttps://nih.webex.com/nih/onstage/g.php?MTID=ed0df94a8445d445bbbd5276edc553b51 \nEvent Key: 1234 \nAudio conference information \nWhen you log in\, you will be given a choice of Audio Connections. SUMMARY:A Waterway to 2025\, Restoring Natural Systems in the Anacostia River Watershed
DESCRIPTION: \nA Waterway to 2025\, Restoring Natural Systems in the Anacostia River Watershed\n \nWHEN: Wednesday\, Oct. 4\, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.\n \nWHERE: Silver Spring United Methodist Church\, 8900 Georgia Ave\, Silver Spring\, MD 20910 \n(just north of the SS business district)\n \nWHO: Mr. Jorge Bogantes Montero\, Natural Resources Specialist at the Anacostia Watershed Society\n \n\nAre you ready for some good news along about now? Come hear a tale of hope and progress! Come a little early while it’s still light and investigate the church’s new conservation landscaping. \nIf you’ve lived in this area for very long\, you’ll remember the Anacostia as a truly forsaken river.  Plagued by centuries of neglect\, from European settlers farming the land unsustainably to modern industry’s toxic pollution\, this river\, which the founders of Washington expected to run through the most expensive real estate\, was a trash-covered open sewer.\n\n  \nBut 28 years ago\, the founders of the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) envisioned a different river: one that supports a vibrant ecosystem–good for wildlife and for recreation.  They saw a valuable public asset that deserves to be cleaned and restored.  Today\, thanks in large part to the Society’s energetic stewardship\, engagement with local people\, education\, and advocacy\, that vision is widely shared and much progress has been made.  To address the sewer pollution the DC government is building massive retention tunnels designed to reduce 98% of it by 2022.   The Anacostia River is on its way to meeting the goal of being fishable and swimmable by 2025\, in keeping with the Clean Water Act. \n \nMr. Bogantes Montero\, who has played a big role in the efforts\, will show us how AWS has worked to restore the river’s ecosystem services by restoring its waterways\, wetlands\, forests\, meadows\, and biodiversity. \n \nBio: Jorge Bogantes Montero is a Natural Resources Specialist at the Anacostia Watershed Society in Bladensburg\, MD. He leads ecological restoration projects on public parklands in the Anacostia River and its tributaries\, including wetland restoration\, tree plantings\, meadow creation\, SAV propagation and invasive plant management.  He also supervises AWS’ River Restoration interns\, is an ISA Certified Arborist and has extensive experience in biodiversity conservation\, environmental education and community outreach.  Mr. Bogantes Montero has a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management and Protection from the Universidad Estatal a Distancia in San Jose\, Costa Rica\, his native country.  Before moving to the U.S.\, Jorge worked in Costa Rica on tropical biodiversity conservation.\n \nWith so much to be depressed about\, this is a program to lift your spirits!\n \nLight refreshments.  Come and be inspired to do more for our Northwest Branch\, a headwater for the Anacostia.  Come a little early and investigate the conservation landscaping the church has installed to do its part in improving our waterways!

SUMMARY:TPSS Community Kitchen Grand Opening!
DESCRIPTION:Takoma Park Silver Spring Community Kitchen Grand Opening! \nMost small-scale food business entrepreneurs lack the capital to invest in their own production facilities\, and rental costs at the handful of available commercial kitchen establishments in the DC area are prohibitive — especially for low-income producers. So Crossroads developed the shared-use Takoma Park Silver Spring Community Kitchen to help meet the needs of small-scale food entrepreneurs. Come celebrate the grand opening of the kitchen with us on Saturday\, September 16! \nThe 1\,120 square-foot kitchen and storage facility meets all local health and safety requirements governing food produced for sale to the public\, and provides much needed food preparation space to those who have completed or are enrolled in Crossroads’ Microenterprise Training Program. To date\, 61 people have completed the 10-week series of free\, bilingual business training workshops. The kitchen will also serve the community in food recovery efforts and by offering cooking and nutrition classes. \nAre you an aspiring food entrepreneur? The next session of the Microenterprise Training Program training is full\, but if you’re interested in participating in a future session\, please send an email to kitchen@crossroadscommunityfoodnetwork.org.
