As Montgomery County, MD\u2014the main focus of this forum, though the topic is relevant everywhere\u2014concludes the drafting of its Climate Action Plan after nearly a year and a half of work with citizen advisors, consultants, and its own staff, we are faced with the daunting goals we have set: 80% reduction in our carbon emissions by 2027, and 100% by 2035. <\/span>How will we get there? What are the limits of renewable energy? Are we addressing the root causes?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Climate change is part of a larger crisis, often labeled “overshoot,” and solar and wind power by themselves won’t extricate us from that dilemma. The ability of renewables to fully replace fossil fuels has been oversold. <\/span>If that is the case, what are our alternatives?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Beginning in 2003 with <\/span>The Party\u2019s Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies<\/span>, one of the first full-length analyses of peak oil, Richard Heinberg has written numerous books on topics examining the implications of our modern society\u2019s dependence on fossil fuels, and what may come next as the availability of cheap fossil fuels begins to decline. In addition to Richard\u2019s forthcoming new book, his 2016 book <\/span>Our Renewable Future: Laying the Path for One Hundred Percent Clean Energy<\/span> will be pertinent to the evening\u2019s discussion.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
