“Cancer Alley,” a region along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, has some of the highest cancer rates in the country due to its dense concentration of polluting industries. Despite this, there are plans to expand this chemical corridor with even more factories.

Sharon Lavigne, the 2021 Goldman Environmental Prize winner, 2022 Laetare Medal recipient (The Laetare Medal is the most prestigious award given to American Catholics), and one of Times “The 100 Most Influential People of 2024” leads the charge against these expansions with her organization, Rise St. James.

Rise St. James is a faith-based grassroots organization, founded by Sharon Lavigne in 2018, that is fighting for environmental justice as it works to defeat the proliferation of petrochemical industries in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Under her leadership, the community successfully blocked the construction of a $1.25 billion plastics manufacturing plant in 2018. Now, they are battling against Formosa Plastics’ proposal to build a massive multibillion-dollar plant in the area.
