The alarming volume of plastics in the oceans and freshwater bodies is of growing concern worldwide and is also threatening the well-being of marine life, and ultimately human life. One Montgomery Green has created the Clean Headwaters program to increase awareness and understanding of the presence of plastics pollution and what we can do about it.
Over the course of six sessions, participants in our project will be doing hands-on community science to determine the extent of the plastics pollution in Montgomery County streams. The program’s driving questions are 1) Is there plastic pollution (either macro or micro) in the stream visited, and 2) If plastic pollution is present, how can this problem be a) prevented, b) better managed, or c) reduced?
Participants will collect data at a local stream, do lab analysis of plastics, create action projects to explore possible solutions to the problem, and join in a community stream clean up. There is opportunity for students to develop valuable science skills, help our communities, and earn student service learning hours. The program is free for students whose application is accepted. Each student will independently complete an action project that addresses the program’s driving questions. Action projects may be designed for personal action, community-level action or systems-level action and should encompass information and data gathered during the course of the program. Students will present their action projects in school-based and/or public forums at the end of the sessions
Participating Any Montgomery County High School student from grades 9-12 who are able to commit to attending the six sessions are encouraged to apply to the program.
