April is Earth Month 2024

From the Executive Director: April, 2024  As we bid farewell to Earth Month, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible events and initiatives that unfolded over the past few weeks. It was a month filled with meaningful connections, inspiring discussions, and impactful actions, all geared to promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship in our community.

The highlights included the launch of new EV chargers by our sponsors, Pepco, in Wheaton Regional Park and the relaunch of Bethesda Green’s Business Incubator. Both these events represent significant steps towards promoting clean energy in our area and underscore the importance of fostering innovation and collaboration in our resilience efforts.

One of the most impact events was attending the two-day Montgomery County Energy Summit, where I had the opportunity to learn more about resiliency in preparing for the challenges of Climate Change, energy innovation and resources available to aid in furthering our sustainability efforts. I was also privy to a backstage tour of the Silver Spring Library, its energy efficient features and green roof.

In addition to these events, I had the pleasure of participating in the Takoma Park Silver Spring Coop Earth Day celebration, where I marveled at the insect zoo and learned more about bees. I was also honored to help facilitate conversations at the Prince Georges County Public Schools’ inaugural Climate Ready Leadership Conference, a truly rewarding and inspiring experience. It was a joy to collaborate with fellow climate change professionals and share insights on building resilience in our communities.

On a more personal note, I participated in a clean-up event at my local stream with my neighbors, reaffirming my commitment to protecting our natural environment and preserving local ecosystems.   Lastly, we wrapped up Earth Month with the Montgomery County GreenFest, where over 750 individuals came together to celebrate and learn about sustainability. Despite the weather, the turnout was a testament to the growing movement behind environmental action in our community.

As I reflect on these events, I am reminded of the power of collective action and the importance of fostering partnerships and collaboration. I am deeply grateful to our partners and sponsors who have supported these efforts with their time, talent, and resources. While Earth Month may have come to a close, our commitment to sustainability remains steadfast throughout the year. We look forward to continuing our efforts to create a greener, more resilient future for Montgomery County and beyond and hope you will join us at future events.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our shared mission.
