Preserving the Legacy of an Iconic Montgomery County Farmer

May 25, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Preserving the Legacy of an Iconic Montgomery County Farmer

Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902

Fri. May 25th, 2018  •  6:30pm to 8:30pm

Join Kate Median and Hannah Sholder, founders of The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming, discuss life and work at the farm in downtown Silver Spring. The non-profit’s mission is to steward and manage urban farms across the county to provide hands-on agricultural STEM education. Extending this vision further, the founders seek to support a network of urban farms across the county that are bound by a commitment to inspiring the next generation of sustainable food innovators. Acting on this vision, the founders will discuss their educational, farm management and land stewardship programs at the flagship Koiner Farm.

Koiner Farm, established in 1983, is a landmark for fresh produce and neighborhood interaction. Yet, much of what goes into the production of its produce is a mystery to many. The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming, named in honor of the 98-year old head farmer, has been established to ensure that Koiner Farm not only remains a working farm in perpetuity, but also becomes a hub of agricultural education for the surrounding community.

This event will be held at Brookside Gardens
