The Climate Mobilization MoCo Monthly Meeting
Thursday, April 14, 7:30 to 9:00 PM

Barbara Coufal, Co-Chair of Citizens Against Beltway Expansion (CABE) and an experienced advocate, will discuss CABE’s work to stop the Maryland Department of Transportation’s plan to add toll lanes to I-270 and to the Beltway. Allies working with CABE include: the MD Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, Don’tWiden270.org, the National Parks Conservation Association, the Coalition for Smarter Growth and many others.

Questions covered include:
       
•  Can we afford a $50 toll which will impact the most vulnerable and marginalized communities?
•  Why were no other transportation alternatives considered?
•  Will the adverse effect on people of color and destruction of waterways, forests and stream valley parks support our clean air and clear water goals?
•  Why does the MDOT’s environmental review not include an analysis of the impact of the projects on greenhouse gas emissions?

Montgomery County’s Climate Emergency Resolution is to decrease GHG by 80% by 2027 and 100% by 2035.  We have no hope of reaching those goals if we widen 495/270 as it has been shown that widening roads induces demand.
